10 Chapter 10
On another sunny afternoon, someone hurriedly pushed open the door of the pet hospital, cradling an injured kitten in their arms.
I quickly guided them to the examination room. The situation wasn’t urgent, and I let out a sigh of relief. Only then did I have time to look up, and to my surprise, it was Brent.
He said he was also in this city, just driving by when he saw an injured kitten on the roadside. He immediately searched for the nearest pet hospital.
Everything seemed coincidental, yet somehow destined.
The kitten stayed here to recover, and Brent came to visit it every day.
Through our daily chats, I learned that he was actually the CEO of a publicly traded company.
I couldn’t help but mutter, “How come you, as a CEO, have so much free time to volunteer and hang out at our hospital every day? You’re truly the epitome of the evil capitalist.”
He suddenly leaned close to me and said, “What are you saying? Speak up, didn’t you eat today?”
Startled, I instinctively swatted at him, only realizing afterward that it might have been a bit abrupt.
As I was hesitating whether to apologize, he suddenly asked an odd question.
“Scarlett, do you really not remember me?”

I furrowed my brow, pondering for a long while, but couldn’t recall any previous interactions between us. My eyes clearly conveyed the message, “Should I remember you?“He felt a bit dejected, then proceeded to explain.
As it turned out, my father had funded his college tuition.
Dad saw him as a malleable talent and planned to recruit him into Ms. Carlisle for grooming after graduation. During his studies, Dad even invited him over for dinner.
It was his first time dining in such a luxurious home, and he was extremely nervous. Just as he was fidgeting uncomfortably, I came home.
I was in eighth grade at the time. Noticing his nervousness, I gave him a piece of candy and invited him to come over more often.
He was pleasantly surprised and was about to express his gratitude when another voice completely captured my attention, and I excitedly ran out.
It was Ethan calling for me at the door.
At that moment, he found himself inexplicably drawn to me. That piece of candy became the only sweetness in his otherwise bitter life that followed.
But by the time he graduated, Ms. Carlisle had gone bankrupt. He searched everywhere but couldn’t find any trace of me.
The next time he heard news of me was about my wedding to the Montgomery family’s only son.
Though disappointed, he was happy that I had found someone who

truly loved me.After our marriage, he gradually reduced his attention towards me, while his career continued to rise. With sheer determination, he founded his own company at thirty, then expanded and strengthened it.
Later, I overheard industry insiders gossiping over dinner and learned that Ethan had taken on a young secretary.
His long–dormant heart began to beat anew.
