Chapter 0033
Aria’s POV
Nothing 1 said to Lucian was a lie. For a werewolf to conceive, both partners needed a certain measure of love and affection for each other. That I was pregnant could, from the outside, be seen as something of a miracle.
But I remembered the night that Lucian came to me, a couple of weeks before our anniversary.
As we had slept in different bedrooms, at first I suspected that he might have been lost. I’d known he’d gone out drinking that night, and could scent whiskey in the air.
“Lancian, this isn’t your bedroom,” I said.
“I know that,” he’d whispered, stumbling closer to my bed “I’m not going to my bed tonight. I’m staying here.”
This type of spontaneity was unusual for him. Usually, the nights we were to be intimate were planned far in advance. It had never felt particularly romantic more like chore that needed done for the sake of the pack.
Yet, that night was different. Lucian pulled back the blankets of my bed and slipped inside, joining me.
He wrapped his arms around me. “Aria…” he whispered, desire in the name.
How easily I fell into him, turning toward him. He pushed homself up on one elbow to look down at me. With lust in his eyes, so much passion, he leaned down and claimed my mouth with his
He hadn’t kissed me like this in years, his tongue delving deeply into my mouth, as if he was trying to claim every mch of me, inside and out.
“Lucian,” I sighed, when we parted for air.
He fumbled in trying to remove my sleep clothes. After I helped him, he gazed over me like a greedy man over his
Treasures.
“My wife,” he said with a growl and devoured me.
The night had been so filled with passion, so out–of–character for him, that in the morning, when I woke up alone, Lassumed it had all been a dream. Only the hint of whiskey scent still lingering in the air and a pleasant soreness between my legs told me otherwise.
But, given how polite and distant Lucian seemed at breakfast, I convinced myself I had only imagined the night of pleasure.
I might have kept thinking so too, if I had not ended up pregnant. Other than that night, we had not laid together in nearly a year, and I had no other lovers. I was ever faithful to my husband.
The baby had to be his, and it could have only been from that strange night when he’d finally shown me passion
and affection
It felt a little tragic, knowing that such passion existed in Lucian, but that he kept it under lock and key, hidden away behind a façade of over–politeness and distance.
Looking at him now, as he stood across from me in the gardens, he hardly seemed the same man.
“I have not been fulfilling my proper duties as your husband,” Lucian said. “Give me time and patience, and I will work to fix this. We will find a way to have a child. We don’t need to go through such an extreme as divorce.
Still, he was stubbornly trying to fix the damage that he’d done through his years of indifference. Yet even his offer now wasn’t satisfactory. I didn’t want him to have to fulfill his proper duties as a husband, I wanted him to

I was tied of kidding myself. For so long, I had tried to convince myself that whatever little Lucian had deigned to

I knew better now. Outside of my loveless marriage, there was an entire world ready and waiting for my baby and I to explore. As soon as I gathered enough money, I would leave this pack and find my own way. I tried with Lucian, but I’d depended on him for far too long already.
