Chapter 7
Margot would call him about anything and everything.
The first time was when we were picking out wedding dresses. Summer had just changed into his suit when Margot called to say Zoe was sick. Summer rushed out, not even waiting to change out of his clothes, leaving me alone with the shop assistant who was holding the bill.
The second time was at two in the morning. Margot called to say there was a thief trying to break in. Summer didn’t hesitate and left without me having the chance to tell her to call the police.
Then, he brought Margot and Zoe to stay with us. To make them comfortable, he even

gave up the master bedroom, telling me to stay in the guest room.
The third time was when our parents met to discuss the wedding date. My parents had flown in to meet his family.
We waited for two hours at dinner, but Summer never showed up. When I called him, he was attending Zoe’s parent–teacher conference with Margot.
Because of Summer’s no–show, my parents were furious. My dad outright told me that he didn’t want me to marry Summer.
He said that if a man didn’t care about me, even if we got married, I wouldn’t be happy.
But I loved Summer, and I wanted to marry him.

I begged my parents to give him another chance.
They stayed one more day, reluctantly, and that night, Summer apologized and promised we would make it up to my parents the next day.
But the next morning, he dropped Margot off at work and never returned.
My parents didn’t say a word; they just left.
At that point, I made excuses for Summer. I told myself he must have had something urgent to attend to.
It turned out I was too naive.
It wasn’t that Summer couldn’t come, it’s that I no longer mattered to him.

At least not as much as Margot and Zoe did.
After finishing up with the school, I went home with a few belongings.
As soon as I entered, Summer’s cold face greeted me.
I had no energy left to deal with him, but Summer blocked my way.
“Why are you doing this?” Summer’s voice was cold as ice.
Was it for Zoe’s sake again?
“If you insist on thinking I’m bullying Zoe, there’s nothing I can do about it.”
“Nicole, I know you’re not happy with Zoe living here, but you can’t blame her. She’s just a child; she doesn’t understand

anything,” Margot wiped her tears.
“Children may not understand, but they can be taught,” I said, glaring at Margot. I was fed up with her passive–aggressive remarks and manipulation.
“That’s enough. You’ve done something wrong, and now you’re blaming a child. Nicole, when did you become like this?” Summer’s face was filled with disappointment.
I sneered. “I’ve never changed. It’s you who changed. You treat me like something you can throw away whenever you want!”
“You’re talking nonsense. There’s nothing between me and Margot” Summer yelled, flustered and angry.
“Did I mention names? You’re so eager to

match yourself to it. Am I right?”
“Nicole!” He slapped me.
I covered my face and slowly lifted my gaze to meet Summer’s.
I had never imagined a day when he would strike me–twice.
And now, I had been slapped by him twice.
