Upon realizing that I wasn’t asleep, Jack’s body stiffened, and he hurriedly withdrew his
arms.
“When did you wake up?”
“From the moment you entered the room.”
I sat up, looking at him with amusement.
“Jack, do you really not know why I became depressed?”
Jack rubbed his brow irritably.
“There’s really nothing between Ella and me. She went through a lot of hardship abroad. I’ve watched her grow up since we were kids, so I just wanted to take care of her a bit
more.”
“Take care?”
I sneered, the anger that had been suppressed in my heart exploding at this moment.
I raised my hand and left a deep red handprint on Jack’s face.
This slap contained all the grievances and resentment I had accumulated over these
years.
I used all my strength, leaving a tingling sensation in my palm, but I had never felt so
relieved.
I shouted, as if wanting to yell out all the loneliness and bitterness I had experienced over these years.
“Let me ask you, all these years, I’ve supported you in your career, given birth to your child, and treated you with sincerity, right?”
“But what about you? Between Ella and me, you’ve always stood on her side. Whatever she says goes?”

“Jack, sometimes I really wonder if your brain has been eaten by dogs. If you had just traced the bank account number used to transfer money to the kidnappers, you would have found the real mastermind behind the kidnapping.”
I looked him up and down thoughtfully.
“Or perhaps you’re not stupid, but willing to be kept in the dark, afraid to see the truth, is that it?”
“Enough!”
Jack harshly interrupted me, as if afraid I would say more.
He scrambled off the bed, holding his swollen right cheek, and rushed out of the room, almost in a panic.
