Chapter 79
“It’ll be ready by the end of the day
“Make sure to keep important things like that safe from now on. Don’t let something like this happen again. I can help you once, but I won’t be able to save you twice.”
Sheila’s tears only flowed harder, and her pitiful, tear–streaked face had a charm that made me feel a bit guilty.
In that moment, I couldn’t help but think that Sheila reminded me of someone–Rhea. Both were fair–skinned, beautiful young women who cried so sweetly. I thought, ‘Could they be sisters?‘
I quickly shook off the thought. It didn’t make sense. Sheila was from out of town. She came to Fairhaven for college after the entrance exams and stayed here after graduation.
Rhea, on the other hand, was a local and had been entangled with Dexter for years. The idea that they could be connected was far–fetched.
I asked Sheila, “Do you have any siblings?”
Without thinking, she answered, “I have an older brother.”
That ruled out the possibility. I nodded. “Alright, get back to work. Focus.”
“Got it, Sylvia.”
I was about to leave when the boss’s secretary came in, saying that the boss, Ezekiel Jacobson, wanted to see me.
I thought, Typical of the big boss. I’ve been at the company less than half an hour, and he already knows. I wasn’t dressed for a meeting–I had on a casual hoodie and sweatpants, looking completely laid–back
I looked down at my outfit. “Is it okay to go into Mr. Jacobson’s office looking like this?”
The secretary, June Spencer, replied, “Mr. Jacobson specifically asked for you to come right now.”
When I entered the office, Ezekiel glanced up briefly. “Sit.”
I took a seat across from him, waiting for whatever was coming.
“How’s the self–reflection going since you’ve been at home?”
“Weren’t I supposed to be resting? Do I still need to reflect?” I asked, puzzled.
Ezekiel gave me an exasperated look. “I remember telling you on your first day that maintaining a good family environment is key to doing well at work.”
“Family stuff isn’t something I can control on my own.”
“You still need to keep an eye on things. What’s the situation with the photos? Have the police found anything?”
“They’re still investigating, but they should have some leads now.”
“Keep an eye on it. A woman getting those kinds of photos taken and released–most women would have lost it.” Ezekiel sighed. “Luckily, we caught it early. The PR team handled it, and the photos didn’t go viral. You’re lucky this time.”

I smiled. “Thank you, Mr. Jacobson.”
“I didn’t call you here for nothing. How’s your health?”
“Almost fully recovered.”

“Good. There’s a dinner tonight, and I need you to attend. Go home, change into something more formal, and then come back. Ezekiel said, giving me a direct order.
“Who’s the client that’s important enough for you to personally attend to?”
“People from headquarters are coming. Does that sound important enough?
“Yeah…” Then something clicked. “Mr. Jacobson, do you know a Mr. Macdonald, who worked with our company before?”
“Why do you ask about him?” Ezekiel raised an eyebrow, looking at me curiously.
I hesitated but decided to ask anyway. “I was thinking of asking him for help, to see if he can help get Dexter reinstated.”
At that moment, Ezekiel dropped his pen with a clink. He looked at me, scanning me from top to bottom, and then said, “Sylvia, I didn’t realize it before, but you really are a saint, aren’t you?”
I was speechless. After a long pause, I stammered, “I… I’m doing it for my son. I want him to have a chance to live, so I need to ask for this favor.”
1 laughed nervously, but before I could even finish, Ezekiel cut me off. “If you’re not going to laugh, then don’t. You look ridiculous, and it’s messing with my mood. It’s also affecting my work efficiency
I had no words.
“Consider yourself lucky,” Ezekiel said after a moment. “Mr. Macdonald will be at the dinner tonight. You can bring whoever you need to bring
“Thank you, Mr. Jacobson!” I said, relieved.
“Now go get ready. Don’t embarrass me,” he said, waving me off impatiently.
