Chapter 85
I only called her to ask about it!
“Since it ended up in Alton’s hands, I have to get to the bottom of this. If I didn’t ask her, how else could I find out?”
“Are you really not trying to get back with her?”
“Of course not!” Dexter snapped. “I’ve already told Mr. Macdonald everything, but that woman ran off so quickly, what could I do? It’s impossible to meet her now. She’s already on guard against me.*
A cold shiver ran down my spine as I listened. It was clear now that Wilbur had bad intentions toward me, and Dexter had definitely played a role in it. Thankfully, I had been cautious, and thankfully, Holly had warned me about everything
I watched them through the wisteria, and all the guilt I might have felt toward that child evaporated.
I thought. Why should they be so happy and carefree, while I’ve been left to struggle in the dark? In Dexter’s eyes, I was just a woman to be used, a pawn–whether I suffered or not didn’t matter to him.
If that’s the case, why should I feel sorry for the other woman’s child? That child would eventually become an obstacle in Juno’s life. As Juno’s mother, how can I stand by and do nothing?”
The two of them had embraced each other by now. Suddenly, a thought flashed in my mind. I remembered a short video I had seen on TikTok, so I quickly opened my phone and played it.
The first line of the video was, “Mistress, meet the dog, may you last forever! You two keep hugging, why don’t you just take off your clothes? Since you’ve got no shame, why bother keeping them on?”
A shrill, mocking voice pierced through the night, accompanied by exaggerated background music. It was obvious someone was watching videos on TikTok
Dexter and Rhea froze, quickly pulling apart. I had already stopped the video and was walking away quietly, moving down the pebble path and keeping my distance.
I thought, ‘Look at them–talking about ‘true love, yet falling apart so easily over a single line.
The next morning. I took Juno to the mall.
He’d been recovering well at home, and his little face was rosy and healthy. His lips were back to their natural color, and if you didn’t know the truth, no one would ever guess he had congenital heart disease.
I gently pinched his chubby cheeks. “Remember the promise you made with Mommy?”
“I remember, Mommy. Don’t worry!” Juno grinned. “By the way, when is Daddy coming?” He was still so excited.
After all, Dexter had been with him for years. At least, in the past, he’d been a good father to Juno. To the child, Dexter was still the kind, loving dad.
I hadn’t said anything bad about Dexter in front of him.
It wasn’t that I didn’t want
ant to; it was just that I knew Juno still looked up to Dexter. His image of him was still
till full of hope.
The real shift came when I was in the hospital–Dexter’s indifference and Kimberly’s coldness toward us during that time
left a mark on him.

Chapter 85
But Juno was still a child. Yesterday, when I mentioned having a meal with Dexter, his eyes lit up instantly. Seeing that, how could I possibly refuse?
At 10 AM, Dexter arrived. He brought Juno a small chocolate cake and a toy fire truck–a model that Juno had been wanting for a while.
When Juno saw the gifts, his face broke into a big smile. “Thank you, Daddy”
I softened a little, but not much. At least he had some conscience, though it wasn’t much.
“Let’s go inside,” I said, not exactly warm. “We’ll take Juno around first, then we can go eat.”
“Alright.”
With both parents there, Juno was much livelier than he’d been at home. Dexter lifted him up and let him sit on his shoulders. The little boy was laughing so hard, and I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions….
I forced myself to look away, but then I noticed her–Rhea, standing in the corner not too far away, glaring at me and Juno with a look full of malice.
