Chapter 91

And another thing–until you finalize the divorce, that woman, Rhea, won’t stop causing trouble. She’s been waiting for this for so long. Now that your relationship with Dexter is falling apart, she’s not going to sit back and stay quiet”
“But my son’s illness…” 1 protested weakly.
“Are you out of your mind?” Holly snapped. “Divorcing Dexter ends your marriage, not your son’s relationship with his father. If the kid’s sick, his father should be there to help out. That’s just how things work.
“Sylvia, do I really have to spell this out for you? That bastard’s kid might be older than the time you and Dexter have been together. Your marriage license never protected you, so what makes you think it’ll protect your son now?”
Her words hit me like a cold splash of water. Suddenly, everything I’d been agonizing over made sense. The turmoil I’d been feeling had a way out.
I thought, Divorce is the only option. If I don’t take that step, how can I move forward with my life?
1 figured it out. I grabbed my fork and took a deep breath, feeling a sense of clarity. “You’re right. I’ll handle the paperwork tomorrow. It’s time”
Holly smiled. “That’s more like it.”
She casually pulled up her sleeve to reveal her wrist, where old scars, some deep and some shallow, marked her skin. The sight made my stomach lurch.
I froze. “What… what are those?”
Holly’s voice was calm, but her eyes had a certain weight to them. “These are from when I tried to kill myself. It was a really dark time, I just wanted to end it all. But eventually, I found a way out
“That’s when I made a promise to myself: as long as I’m alive, I’ll make a comeback. So, Sylvia, you’re stronger than I was back then. I see you as a competitor, and you’d better not fall into the same trap I did. Understand?”
Her gaze was fierce, almost burning. It sent a jolt through me, and my heart trembled in response. She was right.
Everyone had their struggles, their moments of weakness. Life didn’t come easy for anyone, but sometimes, you just had to keep going. There was no other choice.
After dinner, I went home and called Dexter. After a brief discussion about Juno’s condition, I got straight to the point.
“Let’s finalize the divorce tomorrow. I’ve thought it through, and dragging this out isn’t helping anyone. It’s unfair to you, to Rhea, and to me.
…
“No matter how you look at it, she gave you a son. She’s stuck by you all these years, and you can’t just ignore her now.”
Dexter’s voice softened, and I could hear the emotion in it, almost as if he were choking up. “Sylvia, you have to believe that I still have feelings for you…” he said, his voice cracking.
I felt nothing but disgust. My response was flat and detached. “I believe you.”
Honestly, whether I believed him or not didn’t matter anymore. All the good memories we had were now overshadowed by the raw, painful reality of the present.
“Can we… not get divorced?” His voice was hesitant.

“No,” I said, cutting him off. “If we don’t divorce, you’ll lose your job. So, divorce or joli–choose one.”
I didn’t sugarcoat it. “The other day, I went to see Arthur. He’s really angry with you. He knows about the mess you caused before, and now do you want me to tell him you have an illegitimate child? Do you think he’ll just let that go?”
Dexter knew exactly who Arthur was and what that relationship meant. The message was clear.
We both sat in silence for a long moment, and finally, he spoke, “Alright. Let’s go handle it tomorrow. After that, I’ve got a meeting.
“Good. And please, pay more attention to Juno’s treatment from now on,” I said, my tone more polite than I felt.
“Okay,” he muttered, then quickly ended the call.
