Chapter 8
Until the alarm rang at seven, I didn’t get up. I fried an egg in a daze, then dragged myself to work, still groggy
As soon as I stepped into the office, I was met with a burst of laughter and chatter. Looking up, I saw Tamara chatting with someone.
Noticing my arrival, her smile faded. She picked up a stack of documents, brushed past me, and went straight into Harlan’s office.
The person she had been talking to greeted me awkwardly.
I nodded in response and sat down to start working
I hadn’t slept all night and was feeling drained. Unable to hold out any longer. I got up to grab a cup of coffee.
But before I could take more than a couple of sips, an envious voice drifted unto my cars. “Mr. Shannon really dotes on Tamara
“Yeah,” another person sighed. “I just went to deliver some documents to Mr. Shannon and overheard him explaining a proposal to Tamara in great detail. I only caught a couple of sentences, and even that was enlightening.”
Ti so jealous. If I had that kind of opportunity, geuing a promotion would be a piece of cake-
The other person laughed. “But you’re not “Tamara”
I paused for a moment, then continued sipping my coffre.
Noticing my return, the two of them fell silent, looking a little awkward.
Before long. Tamara emerged from the office. She shot me a complicated look and spoke in a muffled voice, “Charlene, Harlan wants to see you.” What does he want with me!
I frowned, feeling irritable, but still got up and headed to his office.
The moment I pushed the door open, I saw Harlan pointing at a section of the proposal. “Charlene, I don’t understand this part.”
I leaned over to take a look. It was a basic term–something he, as the CEO, had no reason not to understand.
Did he call me here on purpose, using this as an excuse!
I glanced up at him, but his expression remained unchanged.
Not knowing what he was up
simply explained the term to him
He nodded and closed the proposal. “Didn’t sleep well?”
I nodded. “Anything else, Mr. Shannon?”
He looked at me. His face betrayed no emotion, but I could tell he wasn’t in a good mood.
He remained silent for a long time, testing my patience. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going?
Just as I turned to leave, his voice sounded behind me, unreadable. “Charlene, how was the steak at Eternal Summer?”
frowned. How did he know about that!
Iturned back, about to respond, when his phone screen lit up, revealing a photo.
It was an intimate shot–under dim lighting, a man and a woman gazed at each titter across the table, with flowers and candlelight adding to the romantic atmosphere. The composition was well done.
