Why would a Kenway—especially this mysterious “S” show up at my wedding?
I couldn’t think of a reason. Did we mail our invitation to the wrong person?
Well, at least he got to witness the most entertaining show In all of Metropolis the moment he arrived. I’d call that
a win.
My phone rang, pulling me out of my thoughts.
It was Jean. She wasted no time, snarling, “Those two assholes! I almost smashed my phone just watching them! Girl, I’m so glad you fucking shot back at those pieces of shit!”
I sighed and leaned back into my car seat. “Don’t tell me it’s gone viral.”
“Can you blame it? You don’t see people this insane that often. You can’t make this up!” she replied. “The Internet is split into two camps, and they’re at war, Tay–Tay!”
I closed my eyes, a headache beginning to pulse through my skull.
I wanted revenge, yes. But I didn’t want to drag myself into this maelstrom, too. I could capsize just as easily.
“Are you alright, Tay–Tay? You were attacked!” Jean asked, concern in her voice.
“I’m alright. Just a couple of slaps.”
“Your dad really did it! How could he do that to you with everyone watching?! I should’ve attended the wedding— so I could’ve jumped on stage and beaten the shit out of him!”
Jeannie was supposed to be my bridesmaid, but since the wedding was canceled, I’d told my grandmother, aunt, and Jeannie not to come at all.
“He’s not my dad. He’s nobody to me,” I replied flatly.
“Good! An animal would’ve been a better father than that asshole!”
I hummed, lost in thought as I wondered how to stop this fiasco from snowballing into threats against my company and business.
Jean heard the exhaustion in my voice and grew more concerned. “Hey, where are you, Tay–Tay? Let’s hang out.”
“I’m fine. Don’t worry. I’m not gonna let these shitheads break me down. I was just thinking about how to calm. the Internet down before it’s too late.”
Jean was my best friend–she knew me better than anyone. ‘I know, right? You wouldn’t want the worst of the Internet doxxing you or starting a hate campaign against you.”
We both sank into a quiet, pensive pause.
A little later, Jean offered comfort. “I know a PR company that specializes in handling Internet stuff. I’ll ask them for help.”
“Thanks, Jeannie.”
Before I could end the call, another one came in. “Oh, gotta go. Lacey’s calling.”
“Bet she’s calling to comfort you, too.”
I answered Lacey’s call. As Jean had predicted, she was worried about me after all the chaos with Edward and

Maddison.
A few other close friends called as well, all concerned.
I grew tired of answering them, so I sent a group message letting them know I was fine, then turned off my phone.
I returned home, washed up, and collapsed on my bed.
The pain in my chest returned. I tossed and turned, unable to rest. Eventually, I had to search for my sleeping pills. I’d been suffering from depression since my teen years. It had taken years of treatment and effort to function normally, but when the stress became too much, I lost sleep. That’s why I kept sleeping pills at home.
I sank into a deep slumber, unable to feel anything from the outside.
It wasn’t until midnight, when the alarm went off and Bullet started barking relentlessly, that I slowly began to stir. Someone was at the door.
I forced myself awake and opened the door.
“How soundly were you sleeping?! You turned off your phone and wouldn’t open the door! Someone’s about to die, Taylor!”
