Chapter 40
Had I not seen him just minutes earlier, I would have never guessed this man was some sort of king of the battlefield.
“No, Mr. Kenway. The pleasure is all mine. Sorry to disturb your work,” I replied.
I had instinctively addressed him as “Mr. Kenway” again–how could I not when I was reminded of the difference
in status between us?
Michael swiftly tidied up the table and tucked the documents under his arm before leaving
1 feigned ignorance,
“Have you finished designing my shirt?” he asked, snapping me out of my daze.
The words I wanted to say caught in my throat.
Soren could tell I was hesitant and asked patiently, “Is my mother giving you trouble?”
“No!” I replied quickly.
I hadn’t brought any drafts with me, and I had nothing to discuss regarding his clothes!
I had brought only the truth, and that was all I could offer.
“I… I’m sorry. I didn’t come here to talk about your commissions,” I admitted regretfully.
He didn’t seem angry. He beckoned toward the couch. “Take a seat. We can talk from there.”
I did as instructed. He went to the pantry, poured two cups of coffee, and brought them to me. “You can be candid with me, Miss Jones.”
I watched his chiseled fingers as he set the cup in front of me, feeling a strange sensation crawl over my skin.
I turned to him and said, “I need your help, Mr. Kenway.
“No need to be so nervous or formal now, Miss Jones.”
“Um, I… I…” I gulped. “L… might need… to borrow some money…
1 clasped my hands tightly together, bracing for rejection or a mocking jeer.
“Been in a bind, huh?”
“Um… Yes…”
“How much?”
I looked up and met his gaze, stunned. “You’re willing to lend me money?”
He smiled and settled deeper into his seat.
He looked so good. Every movement exuded charisma. I couldn’t help but relax a little.
“Of course. It’s not like you’re asking me to die for you,” he quipped.
J smiled in relief, though my nerves returned as I thought of the amount I needed.
“I… I might need 7,000,000 dollars,” I said, signing with my hand.

He said nothing. My anxiety rose. He must be too stunned to speak!
“This problem you’re facing… Is it really something that can be solved with quizzical.
“Yeah. It is.”
“When do you need it?” he asked.
“T–Today would be good.”
money alone?” he asked, his tone
“Tell me your account number, and I’ll have Michael wire later,” he replied casually, as though I were asking for 70 bucks.
“Thank you, Mr. Kenway!” I exclaimed, overjoyed.
I was moved. I turned to my bag and pulled out a document
“Here, Mr. Kenway. This is an agreement. I might need five years to clear the debt. I’ve calculated the interest rates to be three times the bank’s estimate. If I can’t repay you in five years, you have the right to take anything from my company.”
Worried he might not believe me, I pulled out another document.
“This is information about my company. It’s definitely worth more than 7,000,000 dollars. I had thought about liquidating the company, but time was running short,” I explained.
“If you’re worried about me reneging on our deal, we can sign this and get a guarantor,” I added.
