I twirled before the mirror, pleased with my reflection.
My phone rang. It was Soren!
“Hi, Mr. Kenway!”
“Hi, Taylor. The driver will arrive in ten minutes, okay?”
“Got it. I’ve just finished getting ready,” I replied cheerfully. “Sorry to trouble you with arranging transportation.”
“It’s no trouble at all. The winding, mountainous roads of Beaumont aren’t safe to drive at night. Since I invited you to this party, your safety is my responsibility too.”
As always, he was considerate and exceptionally mindful.
After the call, I applied a touch of lipstick and powdered my face before heading out.
During the ride, my heart raced with excitement.
Nerves and anticipation blended together, and I forgot all about my earlier fears and anxieties–about showing up at their residence, or whatever motives they might have.
I just wanted to see what life was like for these super–elites and to expand my horizons.
I wanted to see Soren.
Fine, maybe I could also bag a potential VIP client or two.
An hour later, I arrived.
The driver informed me that Soren was already at the door, waiting.
He didn’t have to point him out–I spotted Soren from afar.
He stood out effortlessly in his navy blue suit, complete with a pocket square. His refined, noble air made him the closest thing to a modern–day prince.
Charles, the butler, opened the car door for me.
I approached Soren and smiled. “Good evening, Mr. Kenway.”
“Good evening,” he replied, studying me with a hint of awe “You look beautiful tonight–and unique, too.”
I assumed he was just being polite. “Thank you.”
It wasn’t until I entered the hall that I understood what he meant.
Every other woman was dressed in grand evening gowns, showcasing their curves and doing everything to display their most glamorous side–aimed at Soren, no less.
I was the only one dressed conservatively in pants.
That was when I realized the party’s other purpose: it was also an opportunity for these women to catch Soren’s attention. I hadn’t realized it until now!

We walked through the gates of the Kenway residence together.
The courtyard parking lot was packed with luxury cars of every kind, resembling a high–end motor show.
I scanned the cars casually until my eyes caught the numbers on a license plate: RF 6688.
Memories of the argument between Edward and me in my grandmother’s neighborhood flooded my mind.
Soren noticed my expression. “Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“T–That Bentley…” I stammered, pointing shakily.
“Oh? That’s Richard’s car. Richard Rockefeller. Why do you ask?”
Richard… Rockefeller?
That was the boss of the media company! Harry had mentioned that Soren’s invitation to my canceled wedding was supposed to address Richard.
So the man who had witnessed our argument was Richard? Had he told Soren? Had he asked Soren to corroborate my lies?
Oh no. This wasn’t good!
“Taylor? Taylor! What’s wrong? Do you know Ritchie? Or has he wronged you in some way?” Soren asked.
