“How will you go about it?” Soren asked.
“Well, I’ll just tell him we didn’t have sex,” I replied.
“You mean you’d make him think I asked a young lady to explain these things on my behalf? That makes me look like a coward…”
“Oh.” I buried my face in my hands, consumed by shame. “What are we gonna do?!”
Just as the two of us were trying to figure it out, a voice called out, “They told me you went out to personally greet one of the guests, Soren. I was curious to see who the lucky woman might be!”
A grimace crept across Soren’s face.
“Oh, great. Speak of the devil,” he muttered under his breath.
I stiffened. Richard?!
I didn’t know him before this moment. For one, the Rockefellers were on par with the Kenways in terms of status, which placed them far above the Jones family. Our paths rarely crossed.
Secondly, most of my friends were women.

Our eyes met. I could see the amusement dancing in his gaze.
There was no way to dodge this. I straightened up, forcing a confident smile. “I hope you weren’t too troubled by what happened that night.
“I made everything up for no reason other than to spite Edward Kennedy. I’m sorry it led to an unfounded and unfortunate accusation concerning Mr. Kenway’s conduct.
“The truth is, neither of us did anything like that to each other.”
Soren scratched the bridge of his nose, clearly trying to hide his embarrassment.
Richard’s gaze shifted between the two of us. “Oooh. So the man’s prayers haven’t been answered y-”
“Enough, Ritchie,” Soren interjected, his tone wary.

I blinked, startled by his response.
Richard raised his eyebrows and nodded. “Sure. But you’ve never personally taken care of anyone before, Soren. Do you get it, Miss Jones? You’re the first–and, for now, the only.”
My smile faltered, and my thoughts began to race. A strange sentiment filled me.
What was that supposed to mean? Was he implying that Soren treated me differently from everyone else?
It reminded me of the question I’d been meaning to ask: what was his motive for getting so close to me?
