Edith hesitated. “I’m planning to do one…”
“My daughter is the principal violinist in an international orchestra, but I wouldn’t think of talking about that to most of my friends,” Lisbeth said.
“But-”
Sally tugged on Edith’s elbow, a clear signal.
“You’re too humble, Madame Kenway. Everyone knows that every Kenway is the best in their field. All of you inspire admiration. And I agree with you–Taylor is an exceptionally skilled woman. I’ve always thought highly of her,” Sally added.
She certainly knew how to switch gears.
After flattering Lisbeth, she turned to me. “Madame Kenway thinks so highly of you! You should appreciate this honor.”
“Of course, Mrs. Kennedy,” I replied with a noncommittal smile.
Sally waved her hand dismissively. “Oh, don’t call me that! We’re family, after all.”
I froze. What nonsense was that?!
“No, you’re family with my sister, Maddison. Please don’t mix us up, Mrs. Kennedy,” I said sharply.
Sally looked as though I had slapped her in front of everyone.

The party had begun.
Amid the crowd’s admiring, awestruck gazes, Lisbeth ascended the stairs and stepped into the spotlight on stage.
A stern yet gentle middle–aged man stood beside her. He resembled a grown–up version of Soren, and from the moment I saw him, I knew who he was.
Marlon Kenway–Soren’s father–was a highly respected authority figure frequently featured in the media. “They’re a match made in heaven!”
“So this is what ‘happily ever after‘ looks like in real life, huh?”
“With parents as wonderful and perfect as his, I bet Mr. Kenway is also loyal, responsible, and gentlemanly- prime husband material! Who’s going to be the lucky one to become Mrs. Kenway?“1
“Not you, unfortunately. Just look at your competition in this room!”
I watched Marlon give a speech, publicly expressing his love for his wife while overhearing all sorts of gossip and romantic fantastes.
God, I could feel it.
The Kenways‘ status, wealth, and power were already a big deal. Soren’s charisma added to the allure. Either one of these was impressive enough, but imagine having both by becoming Soren’s wife!
Lost in a daydream about being the one, I was snapped back to reality by a sharp remark.

“So you’re Taylor Jones? I heard Mr. Kenway pays you a lot of attention. But why? You’re pretty, sure, but who knows if it’s because you’ve had a little ‘enhancement“?”
“The Kenways are perceptive. They’ll sniff that out in a second!”
I turned to find a group of young women in extravagant evening dresses and flawless makeup glaring at me.
I recognized one of them–we had crossed paths once. She was Edith’s best friend.
Ah, I got it. Edith had been upset earlier and must have shared her frustrations with her friends. Her goal was to make Lisbeth dislike me. She wouldn’t rest until that happened, I was sure.
I also suspected Edith harbored some jealousy and feelings for Soren, making me an enemy in her eyes. 2
“You don’t look too bad yourself, but it’s too bad you only have two brain cells to work with. You can’t even tell the difference between what’s natural and what’s fake. Aren’t you embarrassed?” I shot back.
