The crowd burst into laughter while I remained frozen in stunned surprise.
Soleil was the daughter of the Kenways. She was the sister Soren had mentioned all along.
I first met her at the hospital, where she pretended to be an Uber driver.
That day, when she received a call–which she claimed was from her brother–I had glanced back and seen a handsome young man standing haplessly by the entrance.
I had thought he looked familiar, but now I knew why.
That man had been Soren.
The second time we met was at my birthday party.
Jean had said she was the one who scrubbed the Internet clean of any news about that embarrassing wedding, and everyone had wondered how she did it.
Now I knew why. She was a Kenway. Either she had spoken to the tech companies behind these platforms or had informed Soren, who had handled it himself.
And then, when I was drunk out of my wits and hadn’t noticed Soleil leaving, Soren had suddenly appeared. He had claimed to be looking for someone in the club and found me, so he sent me home.
Now I knew why!
Everything made sense now.
I studied Soleil even more closely.
That was why I had thought Lisbeth looked familiar. Her daughter had inherited many of her features–just as Soren had inherited his father’s!
The hints had been there from the beginning, but I had never managed to connect the dots until now.
These two–Soren and Soleil–had been trying to approach me for quite a while, hadn’t they?

A flood of questions raced through my mind but now was not the time to ask them.
Back in the real world, Brenda had turned red.
I didn’t want to upset a guest on Lisbeth’s birthday, so I tried to help her. “Look, I know you didn’t intend to buy a knockoff dress. I’m glad you like my design so much. It’s just that I’m not well–known as a dressmaker, which is why you didn’t recognize me.”
I added politely, “If you’d like, you’re welcome to visit my workshop next time. If you find a design you like, I’ll be happy to lend it to you for the same price I offer my friends.”
Unfortunately, Brenda misunderstood my intention and glared at me. “What’s that supposed to mean? You’re saying I can’t afford your dresses without a discount now?

She turned, ready to storm away.
