“Was that how you learned to cook?” I asked, recalling the food he had made. 

“Think nothing of it,” Soren replied quietly. 

All of my questions had been answered. I felt great–upbeat 

Soren noticed, too, because a smile spread across his face. You don’t still think we’re being nice to you because we want your blood and organs, do you?” 

I blushed. “Come on, don’t bring that up! Sorry.” 

“Nah, all you needed was some explanation. I didn’t say anything back then because I figured you’d forgotten about it. Besides, you were ‘married‘ to someone else. 

“If we’d suddenly started being overly nice, it might have caused you more trouble than help. Your then–partner and his family could have given you grief,” Soren elaborated. 

Aww! He was as considerate as ever. 

“Who would have expected things to go sideways like that? Your wedding was canceled, and troubles just kept piling up. I told my family we had to help you out in a time like this. Fast forward, and here we are.” 

I was moved beyond words! 

I had kept thinking they were approaching me with some ulterior motive, but it turned out to be the result of my childhood heroics. What went around, came around! 

I straightened my back, not wanting to keep him from other guests. “Thank you and your family so much for everything over the past month. Your help has been beyond anything I could have imagined!” 

“It’s nothing compared to saving a life, Taylor.” He stood and straightened his back as well. “Any other questions?

“Let’s hear it.” 

“Why were you at my canceled wedding? I heard you used Mr. Rockefeller’s invitation.” 

He looked at me with a faint glimmer of amusement in his eyes. 

“My lifesaver–even if she’d forgotten about it–was throwing a wedding. I wanted to give her my warmest wishes. 

“Ritchie was needed outside the city that day, so he couldn’t attend. His plan was to send a gift and be done with it, but I told him I was free. 

“Thus, I went in his place. I brought a gift along, too… But as it turned out, you weren’t the bride! So I took my gift back before I left,” Soren answered. 

I stared at him in disbelief. “You took your gift back?” 

“Yeap.” He nodded. “I was there for you, and no one else. Since you weren’t getting married, there was no point in wasting my money.” 

“What gift was it?” 

“A 90,000–dollar check.”

We laughed like hyenas. 

Charles actually found us through our laughter. “Mr. Kenway, Madame Kenway is asking for you.” 

“Alright, I’ll be there soon.” 

“You should go,” I said. “I’ll stay here. I like it here. It’s quiet… and far away from trouble.” 

What I really meant was that, being the center of rumors, I would only draw unnecessary attention if I stayed in the hall. 

He nodded. “I’ll get Soleil to accompany you.” 

“There’s no need-” 

But he was already walking away with Charles.
