“I told you: we are not getting back together, and we are splitting That’s the only outcome, period,” I declared.
“I disagree. Even if you sue me in court, you won’t amul our civil partnership as long as I say no,” he replied firmly.
“Sure, maybe the first time! But they always dissolve it the second time. I’ll just have to wait a few more months,” I shot back.
Edward was silent for a moment before he suddenly said, “Are you trying to get our divorce done quickly because you want to marry Soren?
“We’ve been together for years, and yet I’ve never noticed how close you are with the Kenways. He lent you a massive sum of money, stayed at your place throughout the night, and invited you to his mother’s birthday. Why would a family of that prestige even invite you?
“Why do Soren’s mom and sister dote on you?!” he questioned.
Fury twisted Edward’s face into a grimace.
I knew he would find out about this. His family had been there, after all. And now, he found the chance to accuse me of being a slut.
“I had been nothing but faithful to you when we were together, Edward. Don’t you dare slander me or the Kenways. None of what you say will change the fact that we are not getting back—”
The door suddenly swung open, and a beast of a woman roared, “How fucking dare you show up?! My daughter died because of you, bitch!”

I instinctively stepped out of the way as the corner of my eye caught a blur.
Cameron missed me and crashed onto the bench in the corridor.
Her eyes were puffy. Her hair was a wild mane. “Die and rot in hell, you fucking bitch! Satan has a place reserved for you for not lifting a finger to save your own sister!”
I kept my distance from her. “She’s gone, ma’am. None of this is gonna bring her back. You should take care of yourself.”
The doctor wheeled Maddie out of the room. She was covered by a piece of white linen.
Cameron lunged toward the doctor and the nurses.
“Don’t you dare take her away from me! Don’t you fucking dare!” she screamed, hitting them. “She died because you people are useless! You people killed her!”
Edward and Harry had to pull Cameron away by the arms. In the conflict, she almost tore the white cloth. completely off her daughter.
I glanced at her half–exposed face and realized, for the first time, that a life had vanished.

That body had once been alive, but in under two months, she had become a corpse. No wonder her mother couldn’t accept it.
I gently pulled the white cloth back up to cover her face as che final act of farewell to Maddison Jones, my half-
