“With all due respect, maybe you guys are confused,” Cherry offered helpfully. “We’re a luxury fashion house, while Harbinger Inc. is a goods trading company! And also we always pay our taxes!”
“No, I think I get it. It’s my family,” I murmured quietly to her. “I’ll be going with them and leaving the Edwardian Tailor to you for the time being. Make sure the office doesn’t get overtaken by speculation, got it?”
“Okay,” Cherry replied worriedly, nodding.

I smiled. “Don’t worry. I know what this is. I won’t let it geto me.”
After leaving some instructions, I went with the IRS agents
I had known Harry was plotting against me the moment he suddenly became so willing–so generous–in returning my mother’s company shares and even giving me some of his own.
But damn, he’d just lost his daughter. Instead of grieving Maddison’s passing, he decided to start framing his surviving daughter.
That asshole was no father.
But why was the IRS looking for me? Even with these shares, Harry was still the biggest shareholder of Harbinger Inc.–not me!
When I asked, the agents exchanged questioning looks.
“You’re the biggest shareholder, aren’t you?”
“Sorry. Me?!”
“That’s what turned up in our report, at least.”
I was stunned. Harry had worked extra hard to make this happen, huh?
At the IRS office, my communication devices were temporarily confiscated, per protocol.
They interrogated me, but I could answer very few of their questions. I had never actually been involved in the company’s day–to–day operations or business, after all.
At first, they thought I was just playing dumb. It took them a while to realize I was genuinely clueless.
“I only got my shares recently, and at the time, I was supposed to be the second–largest shareholder.
“The one who was really in charge–the biggest shareholder–was my dad, Harry Jones. I have no idea when he started selling off the rest of his shares, but this is clearly a setup,” I explained.
“I see. So you’re saying this is a case of company politics? That is beyond our scope,
ma’am.
“To us, the problem is simple: Harbinger Inc. has been committing tax evasion for so long that its debt has reached a critical level. If Harbinger Inc. can’t clear it as soon as possible, then the owner of the company will face legal consequences.
“For your own good, let’s not get to that stage.”
“I know, I know. I’m willing to cooperate,” I replied.
It was almost noon. I thought the interrogation was over, yet the agents told me I had to “wait a bit longer.”

“The process is still underway, ma’am,” one of them said. Please be patient.”
They left.
I figured I was going to waste at least a few hours here.
To my surprise, one of the agents returned just minutes later.
This time, his attitude was markedly deferential. “Miss Jones, sorry for taking up so much of your valuable time. You are now free to leave.”
