Chapter 129
I was dumbfounded. “Didn’t you tell me to wait a little longer?”
Before the agent could respond, a low, gentle voice called out from outside, “Hey, Taylor.”
Oh my God. Soren?!
“W–Why are you here?”
He beckoned to me. “Over here.”
Overjoyed, I hurried toward him, grinning like an idiot.
As he led me out of the section and through the IRS office, he placed a hand on my shoulder. Before long, the head of the IRS came rushing toward us.
“Mr. Kenway! Good afternoon! You should have informed us you were coming—we would have welcomed you right at the entrance,” he said.
Soren offered a faint smile and replied, “I didn’t want to trouble the department. This isn’t official business. I’m just here to get someone and will be leaving soon.”
“Will you stay for a chat?”
“No, thanks. I need to be elsewhere.”
“Alright. Safe journey, Mr. Kenway. I’ll visit you next time, the head said deferentially.
I had been silent the whole time, my eyes fixed on the hand he had placed on my shoulder.
It wasn’t as intimate as a hand on my lower back, but given his towering height, the gesture felt like a clear statement to everyone around us: I was with him.
At that moment, I finally understood what it was like to enjoy superiority due to high status.
The agent returned my phone and bag with both hands. “Your belongings, Miss Jones.”
“Thank you.” I smiled and turned to Soren. “Shall we?”
“Mm.”
The head and a few of his men amiably saw us off, watching as we got into Soren’s Audi. Even after the door was closed, he waved. “Drive safely!”
As the car pulled out of the IRS premises, I turned to Soren in surprise. “How did you know?”
a
“Soleil. She visited your office to hang out, but your assistant told her you’d been taken in by the IRS. She called me right away,” he said quietly.
His phone rang, and he glanced at the screen. “She’s calling again…”
He answered. “Hello? Yes, I got her. She’s right beside me.”
Then, he passed the phone to me. “She wants to speak to you.”
My heart raced as I took it.
His hand was warm, and that warmth lingered on the phone as I pressed it to my ear. My pulse pounded so hard I could barely register what Soleil was saying.

I just kept repeating, “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. I’m really fine…”
Once the call ended, I handed the phone back to Soren. He easily calmed his sister before hanging up.
The car fell into silence as I forced my heart to settle.
“Thanks to you, I didn’t have to stay in there for hours!” 1 sid.
“You’re welcome.” He smiled and checked his wristwatch. “It’s about one in the afternoon. You haven’t had lunch. yet, have you? Let’s go.”
“Okay! I’ll pay. As thanks,” I offered.
“I’ll take that offer.”
Soren had Michael find a simple restaurant nearby. Once we arrived, we picked the most secluded spot and ordered some snacks and food.
“I heard it was due to tax evasion charges against your dad’s company. Is that true?” he asked.
