“I didn’t mean to skip it. I got sick after Maddie’s funeral… and I haven’t been able to get discharged until now,” he explained weakly.
“You can’t even get out of bed?”
“I can, but my family wants me to prioritize my health.” He coughed again.
I heard Sally’s voice in the background, followed by an unintelligible commotion before the call cut off.
I frowned, lost in thought. His health was poor–I knew that–but if he managed it carefully, he could still function like anyone else.
Yet he had undergone multiple blood transfusions for Maddison before she died. I couldn’t help but wonder if his old condition was resurfacing. If so, it would be serious.
I decided to focus on my work first. We could always discuss this when he was well enough to call again.
Just as I was about to leave work, my lawyer called. “Hey, Miss Jones? The court just informed me that the defendant has appealed for a postponement. The request has been granted.”
“Understood.”
I was really pissed.
