“Oh yeah? Maybe you should congratulate me on my rebirth. I’m no longer the kind of idiotic doormat everyone could walk over,” 1 retorted.
Everything I’d gone through in the past few weeks felt like cleansing fire. I was reborn from it, like a phoenix.
1 should be proud that I survived it, and now my life and career were at new heights.
Had I been even a little weaker or more naïve, I would have been burned to ashes. I wouldn’t be standing here, listening to him react with shock at my transformation.
The Kennedys watched me in stunned silence.
I sighed, tucking the form back into my bag. “Get well soon I’ll be waiting.”
I turned to leave and opened the door.
“Taylor, I’ll help Mr. Jones out of this,” Edward declared.
“Are you nuts?!” I spun around, perplexed. “What good will that do?!”
“I’ll be able to help you,” he claimed.
“What?!”
“You’re just confused by your rage, Taylor. You don’t understand what you’ve done–and I don’t want you to regret it. I’ll clean up the mess you’ve made. That way, when you finally wake up from this madness, you won’t have any regrets.”
I was stunned by his strange display of twisted logic.
I studied his face for a long moment, trying to come up with the most convincing response to this absurd justification. “Are you… hoping he will donate his blood for you?! Mr. Kennedy, he’s an old man with multiple diseases. He can’t help you.”
“You’re impossible!” Edward’s face darkened, and I could tell I’d pissed him off. “Fine. I’m not ashamed of my choice.”
“Sure, whatever you like. If I had known you’d keep stabbing me in the back after everything I’ve done to save you, I would’ve just left you there to die,” I shot back.
“Taylor, how dare you?!” Sally finally roared.
I slammed the door open and shut as I left.
I could hear Sally shouting behind me, “Divorce her right now, Ed! Why do you want a woman who doesn’t even respect or treat her father right?!”
I chuckled. I hoped Edward was a mama’s boy.
Once back in my car, I examined the papers, feeling a wave of melancholy.
I had loved him for years and sacrificed so much, yet this was where we ended up. How could anyone accept such an outcome?

I tried to shake off the emotion, but before I could start driving, Jean called.

“Did you get the National Academy’s invitation? It’s the centennial celebration! They’ve invited a lot of their brightest and most famous alumni to come back.”
Jean had been with me throughout the National Academy, from high school onward. She graduated from the finance program.
“Did you?” I asked, shocked.
“Yeah. The faculty dean contacted me. I’m sure yours did, too. Your final–year project is still proudly displayed in their cabinet, sis. And you’re a celebrated fashion designer who’s always winning awards.”
“I don’t know about that…”
Soren must have been invited, too. As an undergraduate and a PhD student there, he had to be an outstanding alumnus.
“Oh, right. It’s the day your case goes to trial. Edward postponed it again, right? What are you going to do next?” Jean asked.
“I visited him at the hospital and had him sign the annulment form. He… actually did. Fingers crossed he’s discharged by next week so we can proceed with the paperwork,” I replied.
