I sounded excited–as though I was already one step closer to freedom from this marriage.
“That sounds great. Congrats on getting closer to freedom, Soren said.
“Thank you.”
I overheard someone speaking from the other side and was sure he had to still be at work.
“You should get back to whatever you’re working on. I need to drive. Talk some other time?” I suggested.
“Sounds good. Drive safely.”
I was close to reaching my company.
After stopping the car, I thought about our conversation, and suddenly… I felt like I was a woman having a secret affair!
Was it just me, or did Soren seem unusually invested in my separation progress?
The way I reported to him felt like I was trying to comfort a lover who couldn’t wait for us to be legally “single” again.
Then, the fact that I could never seem to end this fiasco with Edward made me feel a little guilty… toward him!
“Oh my God, cut it out, Taylor! Soren is an upstanding, noble gentleman who would never think of anything so crude or improper! How could I think of him like that?!” I reprimanded myself.
I got out of the car with my things. That’s when my phone rang. The number wasn’t linked to any of my contacts.
I had a feeling I knew what this might be.
“Hello?”
“Ah, Miss Taylor Jones, right? I’m a lecturer from the Faculty of Fashion Design. I was wondering if you’d be interested in joining our centennial celebration next month!”
I really suspected Soren had talked to the academy about me.
“I am. I work here in Metropolis after all.”
“Great! For your information, we’ll add you to a group chat on Telegram. It’s a group for alumni returning for the centennial.”
“Thanks.”
I was thrilled and immediately texted Soren and Jean about the call.
Jean read and replied instantly, while Soren took about an hour to respond with a simple [Great!].
I stared at his profile picture, my mind wandering. It showed an ocean illuminated by the sun at da warship seemingly heading toward the horizon.

I just thought the picture was perfect for him. It felt grand, aloof, and heroic. It also had a patriotic aura–like an image of a protector of the country.
I was mesmerized. Everything connected to him now seemed to shine through a rose–colored lens.
“Oh God. Late–stage lovesickness… here I come!”
After two months of chaos, most of my troubles were temporarily settled after Harry was imprisoned.
I didn’t know if Edward had helped him, but I heard from my lawyer that Harry’s case had gone to court. Harry was doing everything he could to repay the taxes he owed in order to reduce his sentence. The Jones family had to liquidate much of their assets, and his new company was sold off, too.
He was still short of 7,000,000 dollars.
I laughed. Harry finally got what was coming to him!
A good mood boosted productivity, and my creativity flowed effortlessly. I completed an entire series of designs and handed them to my assistant to bring to life.
However, I insisted on designing Soleil’s dress myself.
Lately, work had consumed most of my waking hours, leaving little time to dwell on my insomnia.
