Soleil chuckled. “Hey, just because I can’t drink doesn’t mean you girls can’t!”
“That’s not fair! It has to be all three of us!” I tried to persuade her. I was in such a good mood–I just wanted to celebrate with them. “You can drink just a few sips!”
“No, I can’t do that unless…” She pouted. “You tell my brother and get him to approve it.”
“What? Why can’t you do it yourself?”
“He won’t say yes at all if I’m the one calling!” Soleil tugged on my arm. “Come on, Tay–Tay, I really wanna give it a try… Help me out here!”
“B–But… me?!”
“Just call Mr. Kenway and let him know. Tell him we’re at the Oriole and that it’s gonna be fine. I’ll even get someone to drive Sol home. It’s 100% safe!” Jean chimed in
I frowned at them.
Soleil had already taken out her phone and called her brother! And she even had it on loudspeaker!
Before I could stop her, Soren’s gentle voice came through. “Sol? What is it?”
Soleil gestured at me madly.
I steeled myself. “Uh–hem, it’s me. Taylor. Uh, Sol is with me.”
“I know,” he replied cheerily. “She’s dining with you and Miss Valentine today.”
“Yeah. We’re at the Oriole. Jeannie is treating us, which… includes a special edition Lafite. We, uh, are planning to drink it together as a celebration, but, uh… Sol says you’re quite the disciplinarian and that drinking is prohibited for her-”
God, my voice was getting softer and softer with every word My confidence was evaporating!
I leered at those two and asked, “Can she drink with us today? Just a bit?”
Soleil stared at the phone. I waited with bated breath.
If he declined… I would be so embarrassed.
“Sure!”
What?!
“If she’s with you, I’m not too worried,” he replied gently. “A little wine can make things merrier, can’t it? Give me a call when you’re almost done. I’ll come and drive her home.”
Soleil pumped her fist in the air. Jean shot me a thumbs–up and a very evil grin.
“It’s okay. I can drive her home. You don’t have to trouble yourself.”
“No trouble at all. I’m meeting some clients today anyway,” he replied.
“Okay…” I saw Soleil nod. “Right. We’ll let you know.”
“Great. Have a good evening.”

Before I could say anything, Soleil was already chirping like a canary. “What did I say?! My brother will say yes to any request you make! Hahaha!”
My cheeks burned. “No, he would have agreed if you were the one asking too!”
Jean studied me with a very interested expression. I could tell she was growing suspicious of my relationship with Soren. But at least she wasn’t planning to expose me in front of Soleil.
She summoned the manager to bring out the special Lafite.
The red wine arrived soon enough, and after a brief ceremony befitting a wine of that caliber, we inhaled its seductive, sweet scent.
It was a wonderful dinner.
