The straw seemed to be soaked far more than the water level should have allowed. But why? I hadn’t touched my drink since the waitress had poured it.
Had someone tampered with my juice? Perhaps they had stirred it while I hadn’t been looking. But for what purpose?
A disturbing thought crossed my mind–one that was almost too difficult to believe.
Had Edith spiked my drink? Could she have done it in public?
It seemed hard to fathom she would be angry enough to do something like that.
But what would her motive be? Revenge? Was she trying to kill me?
Though, if she killed me, she wouldn’t be able to live with the consequences.
The next terrible thought that crossed my mind was that she might have spiked my drink with a date rape drug, intending to ruin my life in revenge. That seemed like the most plausible explanation.
I couldn’t know for certain whether my suspicions were true, but one thing was clear–I was not touching that juice, not even with a ten–foot pole.
Noticing my silence, Edith asked, “What’s wrong? What are you looking at?”
I flashed her a dark smile. “I was just trying to figure out why you insisted on treating me to dinner. I almost feel like I’m walking into some kind of trap.”
Her eyes shifted away from me.
“What are you talking about?!” she blustered. “How dare you think the worst of me?”
“I was just joking!” I laughed, cutting into my Beef Wellington
To case her suspicion, I added with a sigh, “I’ve considered you my sister all these years, you know. It’s a shap that things didn’t work out between you and your brother.”
She sneered. “Please. It’s all your fault. Edward’s perfect.”
I took a bite and casually picked up my phone, pretending to work on an email. In reality, I was texting Edward.
Me: [Your dear sister insisted on treating me to dinner. She says she has proof of my infidelity… somehow. Seriously, Edward. Did you pretend to agree to the annulment just to secretly send your family after me?]
I put my phone down and took another bite of beef.
Typically, I ate the tomatoes from the salad.
Edith’s phone rang, and she frowned, shooting me a suspicious glance. “Did you tell my brother?!”
“About what?” I replied, feigning innocence.
She snatched up her phone and walked away. “Hello?”
As she left, I scanned the area.
There were only two other tables occupied, and no one seemed to be paying attention to us–except for the surveillance camera aimed directly at our table.

1 stirred my drink with the straw, ensuring the powder dissolved completely. Then, I swapped my drink with Edith’s, pouring half of hers into a nearby plant.
I planned to pretend I had drunk half of it.
She returned after five or six minutes, looking upset. I was sure they had fought.
“You lied! Edward told me you told him about this!” she supped.
I smiled. “I thought he knew you invited ine. Guess you didn’t run your plan by him.‘
I poured myself a glass of orange juice and pushed the rest of the jug toward her. “The juice is great. Have some.”
