It was too late. I had passed my phone to Edward.
Sally leaned in, curiosity etched on her face.
Edward’s expression darkened.
Sally’s shock deepened, and she turned to her daughter, stammering, “You… What did you… What have both of you
“Explain this right now, Edith Kennedy!” Edward bellowed at his sister. “What the hell happened last night?!”
“I–I…” Edith stammered, tears streaming down her face.
Edward had lost it. He stormed toward her, shoving the screen in her face. “Don’t look away! You were the one who drugged her! You lied! You fucking lied to everyone!”
“I didn’t! I didn’t lie!” Edith wailed. “I didn’t say it was her You’re the one who thought so! Don’t blame me!”
She turned to me, her fury intensifying. “What the hell is wrong with you, bitch?! I’ve already been punished in the most painful way possible, so why are you doing this?! you want me to kill myself, don’t you?!”
I frowned and replied innocently, “Your brother was the one who forced me to make a statement. If I didn’t explain myself, he’d call the cops on me! And he’s the one who wanted me here to apologize!”
“Don’t try to change the subject, Edith Kennedy!” Edward bellowed again.
For once, his focus was unshakable. “Why?! Why did you do this?! This is illegal–this is a crime!”
I was sure Edward had already guessed I was about to use this to threaten him. He was at a disadvantage now. His plan had been thwarted.
Sally watched Edith’s tears with a pained expression and pulled Edward aside. “Damn it, Ed. Lower your voice. She’s been through enough! Can’t you show some mercy, some sympathy?”
“He… He doesn’t care about his family anymore!” Edith sobbed harder, knowing Sally was on her side. “He doesn’t give a damn… about anyone but this woman!”
Unfortunately, Edward didn’t soften.
“What she did was illegal, Mom. If Taylor reports this, Edith will end up in jail! You can protect her all you want. You can sympathize with her all you want. But the law doesn’t care!” he roared.
“She’s a victim!” Sally retorted.
“That’s irrelevant!” Edward snapped. “Those rapists should be in prison, but she will be too, someone else!”
Good. For once, Edward understood right from wrong.

“God, you make it sound like the worst sin in the world!” Sally spat. “It was hardly drugging. It was just… a sort of aphrodisiac!”
I was stunned.
Now it made sense why Edward and Edith were so messed up in their heads. Their mother was toxic.
A part of me felt a little sorry for him. He had lived a life of comfort and privilege, yet no one had ever bothered to teach him right from wrong.
