Soren had tossed the ball at me!
I should have been mad at him for deflecting the question back at me, but instead, I breathed a sigh of relief and laughed
“Ha! I was joking! Did you take it seriously? I know you’re the kind of upstanding guy who repays kindness with even more kindness. And let’s not forget–I saved your life Twice!”
He chuckled softly before stating plainly, “It’s more than just repaying your kindness, Taylor.”
My mind went blank. Oh God, why did I bring this up?* Regret? I had plenty of it.
After a moment of panic, I blurted out, “Er, what did you say? I was in an elevator, and the signal cut out for a second!”
He chuckled quietly–as if he could see right through my evasion. But he didn’t call me out on it.
“Nothing urgent, don’t worry. Good luck later, alright?” he said.
Relieved that he’d chosen to play along, I felt my heart settle. “Thanks! I’ll take all the luck I can get!”
The call ended as I stepped out of the hospital.
I pressed a hand to my chest as if to steady my racing heart, ‘God, that could have killed me!”
But if I were being honest… I couldn’t tell whether the romantic tension between us was torturous or thrilling.
Ash and I arrived at the courthouse on time. My so–called “support group” had shown up too.
Ash remarked that he’d never seen a case as chaotic and dramatic as mine in his entire career.
Well, I hadn’t expected it either. I had envisioned a happily ever after–not a circus.
To the onlookers, it was the most entertaining spectacle imaginable. To me, it was a personal tragedy.
Perhaps the best way to view this chapter of my life was as a tragicomedy. Sure, it was excruciatingly humiliating, but after everything I’d been through lately, I was past caring.
At this point, I was willing to do whatever it took to make what I wanted a reality.
Unfortunately, as they said, no plan survived first contact.
Edward arrived on time with a request: the case should not be conducted in public. In other words, my “support group” was barred from entering.
I was annoyed, but Ash explained that this was well within the defendant’s rights.
The judge approved the request.
Many in my “support group” were wealthy, bored housewives, and having their entertainment abruptly cut off didn’t sit well with them.
“Ladies, please! Since you can’t attend, you’re free to go home,” I announced. “But my promise still stands- you’re all my lifetime VIPs!”
The women quieted down.

Then, one of them cheered, “We’ll stay and support you from outside! Mr. Kennedy doesn’t deserve you!”
“Exactly, queen! Kick him to the curb!”
I couldn’t help but smile,
On the other hand, Edward looked furious.
He sneered. “You have no sense of shame, do you, Taylor? This is a divorce case, but you’re treating it like some kind of party!”
“Shame? I don’t care about shame as long as I can finally myself of the biggest embarrassment of my life. And
this divorce is a celebration for me!” I shot back.

The hearing began.
We entered the courtroom, and behind us, my “support group” erupted in cheers. “Good luck, Miss Jones! We’re with you all the way!”
Okay, this was starting to get a little embarrassing.
We took our seats. The clerk ran through the usual formalities before declaring the court in session.
