“Yeah. The court case… Edward at least knew when to let go We’re divorced,” I muttered.
My grandmother let out a sigh of relief and Launched into a long–winded speech that I barely registered. My attention had drifted outside the window.
Paramedics were carrying Edward on a stretcher.
Sally trailed behind them, but as she descended the stairs, she lost her footing and stumbled forward. A paramedic quickly helped her up.
I recoiled, startled by the sight of her fall.
“I got it, Granny. Anyway, I gotta go. I have some things to work on, but I promise I’ll tell you more over the weekend when I visit,” I said quickly.
I hung up and returned my focus to the window.
Edward was hooked to an oxygen tank. As soon as he was loaded into the back of the ambulance, the paramedics began performing CPR on him.
Sally had to be assisted into the ambulance. I could tell, even from here, that she’d been crying hard.
When Edward collapsed, I thought he was just putting on a show, trying to guilt–trip me. But now, everything pointed to it being genuine.
He seemed very sick.
Could his old illness have returned?
The ambulance sped away, the sound of its whirring fading as it disappeared over the horizon.
I watched in a daze until my phone rang, pulling me back to reality.
It was Soren!
For some reason, Ash’s words came back to me–I couldn’t remarry within the next 15 days, or I might run afoul of the adultery laws.
Wait a minute… Why was I thinking about that? I wasn’t thinking about marrying Soren… was I?
I shook my head, trying to clear the thought, and answered the call. “Hello?”
“It’s over now, isn’t it?” he asked warmly.
“Yeah.” I wondered how he knew. This timing couldn’t have been a coincidence, could it?
“Should I congratulate you on your liberation?”
I chuckled lightly, though my heart felt heavy. “How did you know?”
“I guessed it. Didn’t you say you had a plan to turn things in your favor?”

Suddenly, I felt really weary, as though exhaustion had overtaken me. I didn’t want to talk much. “Well, it worked. The judge ruled that we’re legally divorced, but there’s stilla 15–day period for appeal before the verdict is final.” “That’s… a lot more red tape than I thought! When will you be legally recognized as divorced?”
“I’m not sure either, but the official document should be sent out within ten working days. Honestly, it’ll probably take about a month. Just like the cooling–off period…”
Damn. Had I gone through all this for nothing? Now that I thought about it, I could have used Edith’s criminal evidence to pressure Edward into behaving during the cooling–off period!
“The road to freedom is often a long one. The important thing is seeing that hopeful crack of dawn,” he comforted.
“Can’t argue with that.”
“This counts as a victory, right? Maybe we should celebrate with a dinner!”
