Jean asked, “So, how did he take it? It must have been pretty embarrassing to be rejected.”
I shook my head. “I had lunch at the estate. Uh, they invited your head chef just for that.”
Jean Isked. “Dude, he goes above and beyond for you, and yet you rejected him. Amazing.”
I ignored her and continued. “Madame Kenway kept dropping hints during lunch, and I told her… I’m not in the mood to be in a relationship. I just wanda focus on my career.”
“Right. If you start dating so soon after your annulment, everyone will start thinking you’ve been planning this from the start.”

“I know, right?! That’s what I told Soren too! I don’t want people to think he got in the middle of my relationship with Edward!
“And I already have a bad reputation–I destroyed my own family and all that! If they start making up rumors about him having an affair with me, and that somehow being the reason I got divorce… A stain like that could ruin his family’s record and reputation!”
“Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe… no one would dare criticize them even if they took you in as -law?” Jean asked, blinking.

I shook my head. “Hell no! I’m not gonna trouble him with anything like this at all! We’re an impossibility–plain and simple!”
“That’s such a shame. Soren has to be the most perfect man I’ve ever seen,” Jean remarked.
I sighed. “Damn straight.”
“Keeping your head clear when something as good as Soren shows up is impressive as hell, man. Most women would have jumped at him excitedly. And then bragged the shit out of it.”
I smiled dryly. “You overestimate me. I’m already in Lovey–Dovey Mode.”
“What?! You’ve fallen for him already?!”
Her stare made my cheeks burn even more–but I didn’t deny it.
Jean shook me hard. “Oh no, what are you gonna dooo? You’re in love with him, but you have to keep him at a distance! What is this torment?!”
“I know! I’m so tormented, Jeannie.” I propped my chin up with my hands as I watched the water burbling over
the bonfire.
“I’m the worst, aren’t I? I’ve been through this before, and got betrayed in love! The pain was so great… and yet! still fell in love! Goddamn it. Out of the pan and into the fire!”
Jean patted my back comfortingly,
“No, no. Only someone strong enough to weather life’s most painful trials is capable of falling in love over and over,” she said. “Also, you can’t say you’ve ever truly lived if you’ve never experienced things like these.”
1 was moved. “Thanks, Jeannie. You really know what to say.”
“Are you implying I said all that just to make you feel good? Please. Soren is the kind of guy who’d make a nun remove her habit. You don’t stand a goddamn chance.”

Jean brought out two bottles of cocktails. “If you ever feel like it, one day, you should date him just for the experience. That way, we won’t be lying on our sickbeds in our 80s, regretting how boring our lives had been.”
I took a bottle and gulped it down, nodding. “Exactly! No more sweating it! I’m gonna live life as it is!”
