Chapter 228
As expected, Soren’s name appeared on my car radio’s screen.
I felt a rush
of adrenaling shoot straight to my brain when answered the call.
“Hello? What can I do for you?” I wasn’t sure why, but my spice sounded a bit cutesy… and a little fake.
Soren, as calm as ever, replied, “Are you awake? Why havent you replied to my messages?”
“I’m driving. It’s peak hour, so I haven’t had the chance to look at my phone.”
“Oh, I see ”
I couldn’t help but laugh when I realized how well he was playing along with my excuse.
Then, memories from the night before rushed in–how he had hugged me in the back of his car, seerning so fragile, as if he needed someone to care for him.
When he fell silent, I asked, “Why are you calling me so early in the morning?
“Nothing, I just wanted to tell you that I slept really well last night, and I’m perfectly fine this morning. I thought I’d let you know so you don’t worry about me,” he answered.
I was shocked!
We weren’t a couple, so he didn’t have to tell me all that, did he?
My face burned as I stuttered, my voice tinged with irritation, something I couldn’t control. “W–Why would I be worried about you? H–Have you no shame?”
“Is that so?”
“Of course I wasn’t worried about you. I’ve been really busy since I woke up, and I’m rushing to the office right now,” I fibbed.
Soren fell silent, and my smile faltered.
I wondered if I had overstepped with that last remark, and regretted it immediately.
I tried to fix things, saying, “Um… I’m glad you’re okay, but you really need to take care of your health and not overwork yourself. I’m sure your mother and Sol would worry, even if I don’t.”
1 was frustrated with myself the moment the words left my mouth–it felt like a half–hearted attempt to fix things.
Soren just chuckled. “What’s the matter, scaredy cat? Are you pretending to have forgotten what you said last night?”
Now, it was my turn to be at a loss for words.
“Taylor, if there were 100 steps between us, I’ve already taken 99. Is it really that hard for you to take that last step?” he asked.
Soren was direct, cutting straight to the point while I was silent.
His words hit me hard, and my mind instantly collapsed under the weight of it all.
I was starting to lose focus on my driving, but the sound of someone honking behind me brought me back to the
moment.

I quickly replied, “Um… I’m driving right now, but I’ll talk to you later, okay?”
Soren, probably worried about my safety, softened his tone “Okay, drive safely.”
I rolled down my window as soon as I hung up, letting the breeze cool my head. I needed to clear my thoughts. To be honest, Soren had “cheated” a little. He had promised to wait for me, no matter how long it took, but now he was pursuing me without giving me any time to adjust to the situation.
I had no idea how much more my mental fortress could withstand under his persistence.
When I arrived at the office, I forced myself to focus on work, but I knew it wasn’t going to be a peaceful day. After all, that was already proven this morning.
Around 10:00 am, Cherry suddenly barged into my studio. Tay–Tay, your stepmother’s here, and she just beat Mr. Young up!”
My face darkened, and I immediately put down my needle and headed downstairs.
I could hear Cameron yelling like a madwoman before I even reached the conference room.
“Where’s Taylor? Get her out here, or I’ll beat all of you up like I did to him!” she barked.
My face was dark and fierce when I entered, and my staff quickly backed off.
“Miss
“Miss Jones,” they greeted.
My eyes locked onto Jamie, who was sitting at the conference table with a bloodied, disinfected napkin pressed to his forehead, clearly in a lot of pain.
