“Alright,” I relented. “See you tonight.”
After the call ended, I focused on the crisis at hand.
I began drafting my response and simultaneously contacted the lawyer handling Edith’s case to get a referral for an attorney specializing in internet defamation.
I instructed Cherry to have our PR department gather data on the slander, compile it, and send it to Matt Cohen, my newly hired civil case lawyer.
It was noon by the time I finished.
I published my lengthy response and tipped off a few media outlets about it.
I decided to make a quick lunch, but before I could finish eating, my phone rang off the hook.
My friends were helping spread my response across social media. They even hired bots to help combat the trolls.
I sincerely thanked each of them. It was times like these that reminded me of how well I’d lived my life. My family and ex were terrible people, but I had many friends who genuinely cared and helped me without hesitation.
I couldn’t choose my family–and I’d sometimes made mistakes in picking acquaintances–but I had chosen my friends, and they chose to stick by me. That alone spoke volumes about who I was as a person.
My aunt and grandmother found out what happened later, and I had to calm them down too.
Amidst the chaos, I received a message from an unknown number.
[I didn’t expect you to keep a list of every single little thing you’ve done. I bet you’ve been waiting to guilt–trip me with it forever, huh? Want me to sing hymns of your oh–so–selfless deeds, Saint Taylor?]
I knew immediately who sent it, and I was disappointed.
Me: [Yeah, Edward. You should sing hymns about my amazing deeds, you ingrate. If it weren’t for me, you’d be six feet under and long forgotten. I think God made your disease come back because He took one look at how you treated your savior and went, “Alright, what an ass.“]
There was no reply. He probably realized he wasn’t going to win this argument.
I logged into my social media account after being bombarded with notifications–and my inbox exploded!
Some messages supported me, others were from the haters. I skimmed through them all. But what really caught my attention wasn’t what the messages said–it was my response.
God, I had to give myself credit. It was so well–written. Damn, it was at least 4,000 words!
I recounted the beginning of my relationship with Edward back in high school. I spoke about my selfless devotion, including how I became his long–time blood donor when he was sick.
I went into detail about the wedding suit and gown, the planning, the jewelry–everything. I handled all of it personally. By hand!
Why would I put so much effort and heart into a relationship if I had already fallen for someone else before the wedding?

What did Edward do for our relationship? He contributed some money–that was all. On the eve of our wedding, he was off with another woman, playing her hero.
Then I provided context for Sally’s actions that day. I explained Edith’s crime, but carefully avoided mentioning the violation she endured afterward. I didn’t need to. Someone else would spread that part. Plenty of people in our circle knew, and I knew they’d be waiting for an opportunity like this to bring it up.
That way, I wouldn’t be seen as a villain in the public’s eyes
Finally,
I attached receipts to support my claims–hospital records from back then, wedding planning photos, and even pictures from the ceremony itself.
And of course, I couldn’t forget the photo of Edward holding hands with Maddie on the red carpet, while I was forced to be their witness.
