Upon hearing that I had injured my knees and was struggling to move around, they sympathetically said they would treat me another time instead.
Jamie had also come to visit. He sounded rather guilty when he saw that I still couldn’t walk properly, despite nearly a week of rest.
“I wouldn’t have invited you to the company retreat if I had known this would happen. I just wanted to relax a little, but you ended up getting seriously injured,” he said.
I thought of what Cherry had told me before and deliberately kept my distance. “Don’t blame yourself, Mr. Young. I was the one who got careless during the hike–this isn’t your fault.”
Perhaps this was the universe’s payback.
I had once indirectly caused him to get hit by Cameron, leaving him with stitches on his forehead. Now, he had indirectly led to my fall, leaving me limping for half a month.
In a way, we were even. But in the end, I knew I was the one to blame.
I hadn’t hesitated much before agreeing to that retreat–I just wanted to avoid Soren.
Yet, in the end, I still failed to escape him. Worse, my injury only deepened his care and attentiveness toward me, bringing us even closer.
If anything, Jamie had unwittingly become an MVP as my wingman.
“The preparations for Fashion Week are starting soon, and we’re heading to Medhelanon after New Year’s. But your legs are still…” Jamie’s gaze dropped to my knees, his tone hesitant.
I glanced down at myself and replied decisively, “Don’t worry. It’s not a big deal.”
“That’s good.”
Just then, Cherry walked in carrying a few clothing samples
Seeing that I was busy with work, Jamie got up and left.
As soon as the studio door closed, Cherry lowered her voice. “I was right, wasn’t I, Tay–Tay? Mr. Young really does care about you.”
I took the samples from her and said firmly, “Work.”
Cherry immediately raised a hand in surrender. “Alright, I won’t bring it up again.”
That evening, just as I was about to wrap up for the day, I got a call from Ace,
I would have completely forgotten about Edith’s case if he hadn’t mentioned it.
“The trial is scheduled for January 10th, so adjust your workload accordingly. Also, the Kennedys are extremely hostile toward you, so be mentally prepared.”
As a criminal lawyer, Ace was well aware of my conflicts with Edward and his family, so he was giving me a heads- up.
Of course, I had already braced myself. “Got it. Thanks.”

On the morning of New Year’s Eve, I was still asleep when my phone rang loudly.
Drowsily, I answered, only to hear Soren’s usually warm voice tinged with seriousness. “Taylor, you mustn’t leave your house today, nor can you go to your office.”
A buzz shot through my brain, jolting me awake. “Why? What happened?”
“There are some damaging rumors about you spreading online. I’m handling it, but I need you to stay put and not take any action on your own for now.”

A terrible thought flashed through my mind. “Did the Kennedys do this?”
“Not sure yet, but I have people looking into it.”
Uneasy, I immediately sat up and logged onto my social media account on my tablet.
