I grinned at Kevin. “You want an apology from me, right? Well, before that, how about we listen to what your partner had to say?”
I played the recording of the conversation I’d overheard outside the cubicle,
As expected, everyone within earshot went pale.
Yulia panicked. “They were right about you! What kind of snake records everything at the drop of a hat like some snitch?! Mr. Kenway, you have to stay away from her, she’s=”
Before she could finish, Kevin slapped her across the cheek. Everyone jumped.
I was surprised to realize I didn’t need to say all the lines I had planned. It felt like things were already settled.
“I’m so sorry on behalf of my plus–one, Soren,” Kevin said, turning to him immediately. “She offended both you and Miss Jones.”
He turned to Yulia, grumbling, “Don’t want to get canceled by the industry? Then apologize to Miss Jones right now.”
I frowned. For some reason, seeing Yulia backed into a corner made me feel a little guilty. We were all here to celebrate the dawn of a new year, a day meant to be happy for everyone–and I had ruined it, unintentionally.
Yulia knew better than to cross the guy who could make or break her career.
Sobbing, she croaked, “I’m sorry, Miss Jones. I shouldn’t have said those things.”
I smiled. “Let bygones be bygones. It’s fine.”
Embarrassed, Yulia turned away and practically fled the restaurant.
“Are you not gonna chase after her?” Soren asked Kevin.
“Nah,” came the nonchalant reply.
That was it. Yulia had just been dumped. I subconsciously tightened my grip on Soren’s arm.
He looked at me and could tell I felt bad for her. “Hey, it’s not your fault. I feel worse knowing you had to go through all this.”
I shook my head. “I just feel bad for ruining everyone’s mood. That’s all.”
“It’s alright. Everyone will forget about it soon enough,” he said, glancing at his watch. “The performance is about to start!”
Soleil immediately called out, “Look out of the window, folks! Let the show begin!”
As Soren had predicted, the crowd quickly forgot about the commotion and gathered by the window, champagne glasses in hand.
A single flare shot into the sky, lighting it up. Then, countless drones descended upon us like snowflakes. They lit up, transforming the space into something straight out of the future.
The drones danced across the river, forming shapes that were lively and animated. Soaring eagles, mythical beasts, spaceships at war, a montage of civilization’s founding…
I felt my skin crawl at the sheer technological marvel of the performance. I couldn’t help but admire every person who had worked on this.
Chapter 288
“There are about 10,000 drones in this performance,” Soren whispered. “We’ve broken the world record.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “And you said this wasn’t the best!”
He smiled.
The drones dimmed as if fading into the darkness. I thought the performance was over.
