They remained silent all the way to the resort entrance. Only then did Phoebe realize that Audrey had lied about picking up a friend.
Phoebe understood Audrey’s intentions, but in the end, her expectations would come to nothing. There was no possibility of reconciliation between her and Declan.
Their marriage was like a crumbling house, on the verge of collapse.
For the longest time, Phoebe had been the one desperately trying to repair it. But in the end, she realized that no matter how much effort she put in, a house full of cracks and holes could never truly be fixed.
Once they got out of the car, resort staff quickly came to greet them.
The resort was set to open on the 10th of next month, so there were barely any visitors at the moment.
Phoebe had heard about the project from the beginning. It was the Wright family’s biggest investment in recent years.
With thousands of guest rooms, hundreds of conference halls, as well as pools, restaurants, and entertainment facilities, it was the largest resort in Roseberg.
They took a designated resort shuttle to the hotel, driving for over half an hour before they finally arrived.
Raisa Staley was already waiting at the entrance. When she saw Audrey, she immediately walked up with a warm smile. “Hi, Audrey, you’re finally here. We’ve all been waiting for you.”
“I got held up on the way. Declan, Pheebs, come greet Mrs. Staley,” Audrey said.
“Mrs. Staley, nice to meet you,” the two greeted politely.
Raisa smiled as she looked at Phoebe and Declan. “Feel free to explore. Your room is already prepared. If you want to rest first, that’s fine too. Audrey and I are going for a stroll.”
After they left, Declan turned to Phoebe. “Do you want to rest first or look around?”
“Rest,” Phoebe replied.
As they entered the hotel, Phoebe frowned upon learning that Raisa had booked only one room for them.
She handed her driver’s license to the receptionist and said, “Excuse me, could you book another room for me?”
Just as the receptionist was about to take her license, a slender, well–defined hand swiftly took it from Phoebe’s grasp. Phoebe turned to look at Declan, frowning. “Give me back my driver’s license.”
Declan stared at her coldly. “Have you ever seen a married couple sleeping in separate rooms?”
Phoebe pressed her lips together and spoke slowly, emphasizing each word. “Declan, I don’t want to argue with you here. Before I completely lose my patience, give me back my driver’s license.”
Ignoring her, Declan turned to the receptionist. “Give me the room key.”
Perhaps because Declan’s presence was too overpowering, the receptionist hesitated for a moment before quickly lowering her head to retrieve the key.

Once he got the key, Declan reached out to grab Phoebe.
She immediately stepped back, her eyes cold. “I’m not sharing a room with you?
Declan’s patience was wearing thin. He took two steps forward and, without warning, scooped Phoebe up in his arms, striding toward the elevator.
Phoebe was startled and instinctively grabbed onto his shirt.
Feeling the stares of the people around them, she was both embarrassed and furious. Her face turned red in an instant. “Declan, put me down!”
Noting how even her ears had turned red, Declan leaned in and said in a low voice, “If you had just followed me earlier, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Phoebe let out a cold laugh. “So you think I should blame myself?”
“At least you understand now,” Declan replied.
Phoebe was momentarily stunned.
When they reached the elevator, she spoke impatiently. “Can you put me down now?”
Declan remained silent, his expression cold as he waited for the elevator.
Phoebe frowned, just about to say something, when the elevator doors slid open.
