Audrey and Declan both turned around and saw Phoebe standing not far away with a calm expression. Audrey’s heart tightened.

Audrey wasn’t sure how much Phoebe had heard of their conversation. If Phoebe had heard Declan defending Jennifer, she would have been very hurt.
“Pheebs, what are you doing here?” Audrey asked.
Phoebe snapped out of her thoughts, forcing a smile as she bent down to pick up the phone on the floor and handed it to Audrey. “Mrs. Richardson, you left your phone in my room. I came to bring it to you.”
Audrey took the phone carefully and asked, “How long have you been here?”
“I just got here. Since I’ve delivered your phone, I’ll be going now.” Phoebe spoke without giving Audrey a chance to respond, turning and leaving immediately.
Watching Phoebe’s somewhat desolate figure, Audrey shot Declan a cold glance. “Fine, I can’t be bothered to talk to you. You and Jennifer can do whatever you like.”
After Audrey returned to her room, Declan didn’t hesitate at all and quickly followed Phoebe.
He caught up to her at the elevator, blocking her path, staring down at her, trying to find any sign of anger in her expression.
But he was disappointed. Phoebe just looked at him with a blank face.
“Phoebe, don’t you have any questions about what Grandma just said?” Declan asked.
Phoebe kept her eyes forward, her voice cold. “This is your issue, not mine. You don’t need to explain anything to me.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the elevator door opened.
She stepped in and pressed the close button, but just as the door was about to shut, Declan stepped in as well. “You don’t want to listen, but I want to explain.”
Phoebe sighed in resignation and looked up at Declan. “When I wanted to hear it, you wouldn’t explain. Now that I don’t want to hear it, explaining doesn’t change anything, does it?”
Declan’s eyes turned cold, and he locked his gaze with Phoebe’s. “You really don’t care anymore?”
Phoebe paused for a few seconds before speaking slowly. “The day after I first suggested a divorce, I went on a solo trip. When I was in the northernmost area, I fell into a lake. It was freezing, and I almost froze to death. If a shepherd hadn’t passed by, I might have died there.”
Declan’s pupils contracted, and he unconsciously clenched his fists. “I didn’t know about this.”
Phoebe looked at him calmly. “I’m not telling you this to make you feel guilty or anything. I just want you to understand that when I was close to death in that lake, I came to a realization. Chasing something that isn’t meant for me only makes me more exhausted.
“I don’t love you anymore. Whether you have anything to do with Jennifer or not, it’s meaningless to me. Do you understand?”
Declan took a deep breath, his voice firm as he replied, “Even if that’s the case, I won’t divorce you. I promised to take care of you for life, and I won’t go back on my word.”
“There’s no need. I’ll be better off without you,” Phoebe said, and her words made Declan’s heart ache suddenly as if

Back in her room, Phoebe had dinner and then took a nap. She was woken up in the afternoon by the sound of her phone ringing.
