My heart melted. “But Soren, I can’t bear to see you condemned at all!”
Then I looked out the window. God, that was so corny I couldn’t even look at him anymore.
Soren hugged me from behind, pressing his neck against my head. “Hearing you say that makes everything worth it.”
I smiled quietly. The joy and warmth I felt were indescribable. Even as I headed home, I was elated.
Jean had sent me a lot of texts. The drone performance had gone viral, and now the Internet’s comments were flooding in.
Some were heartfelt, happy, and gently jealous. Others were mocking, accusatory, and hateful toward what they saw as the wealthy flexing.
I was in such a good mood that none of the negative comments bothered me. In fact, I even fired back at some of the commenters with a newfound sense of superiority and pride.
For those who accused Soren of being blind for choosing me, I gave my most scathing responses.
Soren watched me chuckling to myself and asked about it.
“Just talking to the Internet.”
“The Internet?”
I showed him my phone. Understanding flashed across his face.
“God, you didn’t need to,” he said, smiling.
“Well, they can dunk on me all they want, but not on you. That deserves a response!”
“Well, aren’t you protective!”
Of course. I’d repay kindness tenfold while destroying anyone who had ever wronged me. Everything I’d gone through in the last few months had taught me to be assertive in my life. I should live according to my own desires, and no one should stand in my way.
I started a comment section war with the haters, especially targeting the assholes who responded to my essay.
The car arrived at my place.
Soren looked at me.
I smiled. “Oh, we’re here? Guess I should head inside now. You should get Soleil home too.”
I stepped out of the car and headed toward the lobby, still plotting my next insults and comebacks for my internet haters.
Soren got out too. “Hey, is that it?”
I turned around, stunned.
“Am I supposed to do something?” I asked.
His lips thinned in disappointed realization.

In an instant, I understood what he meant–throughout the journey, I had been absorbed in my phone, ignoring
him.
And now, I was ready to just waltz home as if nothing had happened.
My cheeks burned. I quickly checked my surroundings to make sure no one was watching, then planted a quick kiss on his cheek. “Thank you for sending me home. Goodnight.”
Soren smiled. “Let’s have lunch tomorrow. Get some rest.”
I didn’t ask why. I just waved at him and went up to my room.
I booted up my computer and started taking screenshots of any comment slandering Soren. I was going to show them to my lawyer tomorrow.
I worked on it all night, only going to sleep when the birds started chirping.
I woke up to my phone ringing. The sun was already high in the sky.
“Huh? Why are you… up so early?” I mumbled.
“Early? It’s 11:00 a.m.,” Soren replied, amused.
Bewildered, I checked the time on my phone.
