Knowing she’d seen Soren’s reclusive grandfather before I did stung a bit, but I wasn’t going to let Candy see how upset I was.
“Well, even if he doesn’t approve of it and we have to break up… at least I will be able to look back and smile at having had it. Can’t say the same for Miss Delulu and her daydreams,” I replied.
Candy gritted her teeth. “Fu-“!
“Taylor!” Jean’s voice interrupted just before she lunged at me and grabbed my hand. “I’m so sorry I’m late. They wouldn’t let me leave until we’d finished one last round of Blackjack. You alright?”
“I’m fine. Let’s go.”
Jean knew who Candy was. Our rivalry had started back at university.
As she passed Candy, she rolled her eyes. “God, did you piss off your surgeon before getting that face job? You look like you belong to a sci–fi race.”
Jean was spot–on! I’d been struggling to find the right words to describe Candy’s look with her bug eyes and cheeks after buccal fat removal, but now I got it. She looked like the most stereotypical alien ever.
“Fucking say that again, bitch! Do it!” Candy shrieked, raising her fist.
The man next to her yanked on her arm.
Infuriated, Candy snapped at him, “Let me go! Why do you keep stopping me?!”
“Don’t make her an enemy, Candy. We can’t touch her.”
“Why?! She’s just strutting around because of her boyfriend! And it won’t last long–Soren will dump her soon!”
“Then wait until she’s dumped! Don’t do anything stupid before that happens!”
Jean and I ignored them and went inside the club.
Once we stepped into the elevator, Jean turned to me. “Okay, why the hell did she just call your boyfriend ‘Soren‘ like they were close?”
“Well…” I sighed, resigned. “She mentioned that after she came back from abroad, her family wanted to visit the Kenway residence with her. I think they did.”
“What?! I thought Madame Kenway liked you! Why are they looking for someone else now, especially after her son finally got close to you?”
I frowned as my thoughts raced. Then, I shook my head. “It might have nothing to do with Madame Kenway.”
“Then who?”
“Mr. Kenway Sr, Soren’s grandfather.”
“No way. The retired general?!”
“Yeah.”
We exchanged a knowing glance.
There was something between Soren and me now, like a drama unfolding. Not that I hadn’t expected it, honestly.

I had a fun afternoon with my girls. I lost badly at betting against them, and my wallet was feeling the sting. When it was time for dinner, Soren called to ask where I was. I couldn’t help but complain to him about it.
Instead of comforting me, he laughed.
“How could you?! I felt like the universe was balancing my luck because I’d gotten something good lately!”
“Oh, you’re right. It seems my presence is such a boon to your life that your luck in everything else has slightly suffered,” he joked.
