I smiled. “Why are you surprised? You’ve visited my place before.”
“It’s different now.”
Soren was right. This was the first time I had invited him over since we started dating. It felt like a subtle acknowledgment, a quiet form of approval.
My voice was barely a whisper. “Are you coming or not?”
He followed me, smiling. We didn’t speak during the elevator ride. When our hands brushed, we both quickly pulled them back.
As I fumbled to open the door to my unit, I felt his warm breath on the crown of my head, sending goosebumps skittering across my scalp.
I stepped inside and set my bag down..
Soren grabbed my shoulders, turned me toward him, and kissed me.
I knew he’d been holding back all night. That was why I’d invited him.
It felt as if we instinctively knew how to respond to each other. I slid my arms around his neck. He lifted me into his arms and set me on the shoe rack.
We kissed our way from the entryway to the dining table, then to the couch. When his hands moved to my chest, I snapped out of the daze.
He immediately stopped, his lips parting from mine, and his hands froze.
For a moment, he just stood there, looking down at me. Our eyes met, and I could sense the silent debate in both of us about what to do next.
We were burning with desire, yet uncertain.
After a while, Soren smoothed down my clothes. His voice was low and hoarse. “Sorry.”
I bit my lip and looked away, feeling shy.
He straightened and turned his back to me. “Um, it’s getting late. You should rest. Goodbye.”
I was still reeling. “That’s it? You’re just leaving? People might mistake you for a thug.”
Soren turned, surprised, and glanced down at himself.
I noticed his face had flushed even more. Well, mine had too.
“Have a glass of water,” I offered, pouring him a glass in the kitchen.
When I returned, he was seated on the couch, his legs spread wide, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees.
At least that hid how awkward he must’ve felt.
I handed him the glass. He thanked me as he took it from my hand, his fingers clammy.
It was a cold day, yet he was sweating. How much control was he trying to exert?
He drank the whole glass in one go.
I watched him, swallowing along with the movement of his Adam’s apple.

He finished and looked up at me, still a little stunned.
“Do you want more?”
“I’m fine,” he said bashfully. “I’m not a buffalo.”
I fell silent, looking down.

I froze. He didn’t want to see me?
Soren cleared his throat. “I just… I can’t calm down when you’re right there.”
A wave of heat rushed to my cheeks. It hit me with full force.
I quickly stepped back, retreating in small steps.
By the time Soren left, he hadn’t come near me again. He only called out from the living room, “I’m leaving, Tay.”
