“This is different,” she insisted. “I’m sure your father can live another three to five years if we spend enough money and hire the best doctors.”
I let out a cold laugh. “And what’s the point of keeping that asshole alive for another three to five years? So he can make my life miserable? Or so he can find another way to squeeze more money out of me for the both of you?”
Cameron’s face paled, her guilty conscience evident in her shifting gaze.
Did she really think I didn’t know what she was trying to do? Would she be so desperate to save Harry if money weren’t involved, or if she didn’t have some ulterior motive?
She wasn’t trying to save him out of love–she just wanted to milk him for whatever he had left before he died. In the end, she was no better than a vulture feasting on a corpse.
I sneered. “What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?”
Cameron swallowed hard. Despite her obvious shame, she forced herself to say, “Whatever it is, he’s still your father, your responsibility… You can’t deny that!”
With that, she turned and left in embarrassment.
I sat in my chair for what felt like an eternity, overwhelmed by helplessness and simmering rage.
My thoughts spiraled uncontrollably, and I harbored a dark wish–that he would grow sicker and die soon so he’d immediately descend into hell, forced to fall to his knees and beg my mother for forgiveness.
