Edith had really trapped herself in this situation. Even if she had an abortion, the trauma would remain, now embodied in a pregnancy that would linger for months. It would hurt more than any punishment the law or the prisons could impose.

Edward glared at me. He blamed me for it all. If not for my resolve and hardened heart, I might have started to feel guilty for real.
“I sympathize with what she’s going through, Edward, but she’s the one who started all of this. If it weren’t for my luck, I’d be the one suffering now.”
“You could have just poured the drink away! Why did you plot against her?!” he asked, his voice sharp.
Alarm bells rang in my mind. He’d become so scheming that he was asking loaded questions just to frame me.
How could he? I had saved his life. I’d been his partner for six years!
“Don’t even try to frame me, Edward. Take your complaints to the court instead. I sympathize with your sister’s plight, but I didn’t cause this. You can’t guilt–trip me.”
I turned away and left.
Jean, coughing, opened the door for me.
I set down the groceries and looked at my best friend, who had returned to her spot on the couch.
“Are you feeling better? Did you get an injection?”
She shook her head.
“Water. Warm water,” she croaked.
I poured her a glass. She drank it and sighed. “I hate getting sick.”
“Why don’t you go home? At least someone could look after you.”
“I did, briefly. Yesterday. My mom wouldn’t stop nagging me! Drink this, drink that! Eat this! Eat that! God, I got sick of it!”
