I was reminded of Edward’s presence from earlier and turn to her. “Girl, you just retninded me.”
“What?”
“Edith’s pregnant.”
“Whaaat?!”
I expected her to have the same reaction I did.
“She got pregnant from that… And there were two of them! Then… who?”
“There’s no way she’d keep the child, so it doesn’t matter. Filward hoped I’d let the case go, but I’ve already asked my lawyer about this. There’s no point in settling outside of court.”
“And why should you?” Jean croaked angrily. “She brought this on herself. It was either you or her!”
“Do you think I might be too…. cold–hearted?” I asked hesitantly.
“Being kind to them is like casting pearls before swine!” she pointed out. “So why bother?”
Jean was right. Even if I agreed to settle outside of court, the Kennedys wouldn’t stop. They might even twist my generosity into an admission of guilt.
With my best friend’s support, I felt better and more confident in my decision.
Situations like this made me grateful for Jean. I couldn’t possibly tell Soren everything, could I? He might get worried- or worse, think poorly of me!
Soren called while we were eating.
I thought he’d grown impatient, so I picked up with a tinge of guilt.
To my surprise, he sounded apologetic. “My family called Grandpa’s not feeling well. I need to go back to the estate, so I won’t be able to keep you company.”
“Oh no. Your grandfather’s sick?”
“Yeah.”
“You should

home. We can talk a
about this some other time.”
Jean flashed me a crooked grin. “Oh no. I’m the bad guy who stopped both of you from seeing each other after being apart for so long!”
“I’m glad you noticed!” I replied. “As punishment, you have to finish this chicken and potato soup!”
By the time I left Jean’s place, it was already 10:00 p.m.
I stared at the design plan without really seeing it.
My mind raced–Edward’s descent into madness, Edith’s fate, Soren, his grandfather… Candy.
thought about Candy. Would she visit the old man with her family?
Should I ask Soren about this? If I did, would it make me look small–hearted and clingy?

The next morning, a knock at my door woke me from steep thought it was from my neighbor, so I ignored it.

Groggily, I opened my eyes to see it was from Soren!
“Hello? Why are you calling so early…”
“Good morning! 1 brought you breakfast!” he said cheerfully.
I snapped awake. “It was you who knocked?”
“Tis L.”
I quickly got out of bed and ran to the door. He stood there, holding a tiffin carrier, his eyes glinting.
“Did you stay up late again? It’s almost seven now. You dont seem easily aroused,” he teased as he entered my
unit.
He leaned closer, as if to plant a kiss.
