I leaned into Soren’s chest and felt it undulate as he spoke Sullt filled me. He was so kind to me, even as I kept trying to keep my distancr.
I hated myself for it, yet I couldn’t open my heart to him either.
“Damn it, Soren!” My voice was muffled against his chest.
“Yes?” he asked, glancing down, his breath warm against my ear.
I pushed him away and took a few deep breaths.
“Are you really not mad at me?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
He wiped the tears from my eyes.
“You’re tormented enough as it is. Why should I be mad at you? That would only add to your suffering,” he replied, his tone calm.
I couldn’t even put into words how deeply his words moved me.
When searching for a partner, one should seek kindness, not just someone who was kind to you. Those who were only kind to you were merely acting, pretending to be what they thought you wanted. But those who were genuinely kind had no hidden, unsavory sides to reveal.

“The prison will try to provide medical care. If it’s a serious condition the prison’s own doctors can’t handle, the inmate may qualify for compassionate release.”
“You mean he’ll be out of prison?!” I asked, shocked.
“Yes. He committed a white–collar crime, which is considered less harmful to others. Inmates like him can usually apply for compassionate release. If approved, his treatment will be covered by his family. If he’s treated while still incarcerated, then the state will cover the costs.
