Lola was furious. “You… You’re exactly what Cameron calls! Vile and heartless!”
“That’s right. Meanwhile, you people are saints! Take good care of him, saints!” I shot back.
She had no response, even after 1 hung up.
The lawyer looked at me with sympathy. “Your troubles never seem to end.”
I smiled, a hollow expression. “Don’t I know it?”
The court case with Edith was barely behind me, and now had to deal with Harry’s compassionate release issue? When would my life stop being so frustratingly “interesting?”
After work, Soren called to ask if I wanted dinner.
My mood was so bad I just wanted to stay home and lie down.
“I’m not hungry. No appetite,” I replied.
“I have to meet a client later. I might finish around nine. I can grab something for you then,” he offered kindly. “No. Your grandfather’s not feeling well, right? You should go home and take care of him.”
I was drained. I didn’t want to talk to anyone–least of all unload on Soren.
He must have sensed it.
“I understand. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said softly.
“Yeah. Bye.”
With no mood to work, I left the office as well.
Unfortunately, my troubles weren’t over: my car refused to start again.
Seriously! This car had been giving me trouble twice in less than three months! I was growing more impatient by
the minute.
While I tried to call a repairman, another car passed by. “Miss Jones? What’s the matter?”
It was Jamie!
“Oh, Mr. Young! Nothing, really. My car’s busted. I’m trying to call a repairman,” I replied shortly, returning to my car.
Jamie drove off but didn’t leave. He simply parked in a lot nearby and walked over.
“It’s peak hour and raining. Traffic’s probably already backed up, so the repairman might not show up anytime. soon. I can at least take a look at it,” he offered.
I was surprised. “You can fix cars?!”
He smiled. “I know a little about a lot of things, especially regarding machinery. Plus, I go on enough outdoor trins so car breakdowns are pretty
common.”
