Chapter 331

Edith had a lot to handle immediately–the abortion and the surgery on one of her fallopian tubes.
The surgery could introduce significant side effects. If Edith served her sentence in prison after the operation, her health would worsen, and she would likely suffer for the rest of her life.
That’s why she had to apologize in hopes of getting her sentence reduced. Her family worked hard to convince the judge to show leniency.
Their efforts paid off: when the case went to trial again, the judge decided that Edith’s apology, her suffering, and her physical condition justified a lighter sentence.
Edith would be imprisoned for a year, but the sentence was deferred for two years. If she maintained good behavior and met other legal requirements during her probation, the judge might even dismiss her sentence entirely.
Not that any of that mattered to me.
At present, nothing was more important than making up with Soren!
He had to be genuinely upset. I called him after leaving the building, but Michael answered and said he was “busy conducting on–site inspections with a few important political leaders.”
I had no way of verifying that, but I assumed Soren would call me back once he was finished. Yet, he never called, even after I spoke with my lawyer and drafted the document for an out–of–court settlement.
On the train ride home, I stared at his number on my phone.
Should I call him? I hesitated…
Tomorrow was Saturday. We were supposed to meet his grandfather at the Kenway residence!
Was this the first time we’d fought since we got together? There hadn’t been a shouting match or anything, but he was clearly avoiding any conversation with me.
Bullet rushed to the door when I got back, wagging his tail excitedly. The dog peeked around the door, circled me,
and barked.
“Wait, so even you’re a Soren fan now?” I said. “Well, he’s not here today… He got upset. But we don’t need him around all the time, right?”
I spent the whole evening working, checking my phone, and waiting for his message.
But there was still no call.
Should I call him again? What if he was still busy?
By the time it was nearly bedtime, I was growing increasingly irritated. Was this really such a big deal?
I had told him I’d explain once I was done with my work. I would apologize if I’d hurt him unintentionally!
I hated when conflicts ended in silence and avoidance. That never solved anything–at least a verbal argument meant we were communicating!
There was likely no such thing as a perfect man. Now that I was spending more time with Soren, I was starting to notice his flaws. He was imperfect–ust as he admitted.

Still, I didn’t hate him. If anything, this incident reminded me that Sóren was a real person, with strengths and weaknesses. That made me feel safer than if he had turned out to be some kind of fantasy.
I woke up to no response from Soren. After thinking it over I sent him a message about our plans for the Kenway residence.
He still hadn’t replied by the time I finished washing up and eating breakfast.
I started to feel uneasy.
What was going on? Was this his way of breaking up with me? Just like that?
Our relationship had started with such excitement. Why was the end coming like this?
My mood plummeted.
Honestly, what was wrong with men in general? I shouldn’t have jumped into another relationship so quickly after what happened with Edward.
How could I have been so stupid?
