They both knelt again.
When the time was up, Harry’s legs were shaky.
Cameron couldn’t support him alone and had to shout at her son, “Get over here and carry your father back down!”
Miles extended his hand. “How much are you paying?”

I’d had enough of this circus and turned away, heading downhill. Meanwhile, I sent my grandmother and aunt the video I had recorded.
By the time I got back to my car, my aunt called. “Harry’s out of prison already?!”
“He’s really sick, so they granted him compassionate release. Cameron wants me to pay for his treatment, so I made them go to Grandpa and Mom’s resting place to repent.”
“Ha! Serves that scumbag right! Sandra and Dad wouldn’t have died so soon if it weren’t for him! Honestly, I think he got off easy after everything he did.”
“I think so too, but hey, if he wants me to keep paying for his treatment every month, he’s going to have to do this over and over.”
“You have to keep paying for his treatment?”
I started the car. “Well, the law says I can’t abandon him as long as he’s alive. But then again, not all treatments cost the same. Some are cheaper than others.
“I have the right to choose, don’t I? And then… well, it all depends on how long God lets him live.”
My aunt understood and sighed. “If you need any extra help just let me know, dear.”
“Thanks.”
When the call ended, I exhaled a long breath of relief. Some of my resentment had finally eased.
Harry and Cameron had probably never imagined this day would come. Neither had my mom,
I wished she were here to see it.
It was almost 2:00 p.m. when I neared Metropolis.
I hesitated about calling Soren–only for my phone to ring first.
We were likely thinking about each other at the same time.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Tay. Are you still dealing with that matter you mentioned, or did you forget I’m waiting for your call?” Soren asked.

I blinked, surprised. “You were waiting?”
“Of course. I was worried I’d miss another one.”

Guilt crept in. It was strange, wasn’t it? I could be cold and calculating with the Kennedys, the Joneses, and Candy, yet I couldn’t harden my heart even a little when it came to this man.
“I just got back to Metropolis, actually. I wanted to call, but I was afraid you might be napping,” I admitted softly.
“There’s no way I could nap without hearing from you,” he said, his voice tinged with relief. “Have you eaten yet?
“Ah, no.”
“Dine together?”
“Sure.”
Soren sent me the restaurant’s address, and I followed the GPS there. By the time I arrived, he was already waiting in an elegant private room.
He stood as the manager led me inside. “Taylor!”
I smiled and took a seat.
We stared at each other. For some reason, it felt like we hadn’t seen each other in years.
