I followed Soren’s gaze to the heroic piece of clothing, now as charred as charcoal. A wave of fear rushed over me again. If that thing hit my face–or worse, Soren’s head…
“Sol? Where is she?”
“S–She was here!” I stammered, shaking. “Oh no, did she get any on her?!”
The bathroom was crowded, and several people were injured. I started running toward it.
As I had feared, some of the acid had splashed onto the back of Soleil’s hand. She was holding it under running
water.
I stared at the red spots and guilt crashed over me. “Are you okay? We need to get you to a doctor!”
“It’s fine. I checked online. For something this small, you just need to flush the affected area with running water for 15 to 30 minutes,” she said calmly.
I wasn’t reassured. All of this had happened because of me. could apologize and make it up to everyone else, but if anything happened to Soleil… How could I face Soren and the Kenways?
“Let’s go to the hospital together. Your brother is coming as well.”
She looked at me, startled. “Is he okay? Is he hurt?!”
“He said he’s fine, but his coat was seriously damaged,” I replied, my anxiety growing as I gently tugged her out of the bathroom. “Come on. I won’t feel right until a doctor examines both of you.”
Soren was waiting outside. As soon as he saw Soleil, he rushed in, concern written across his face. I told them we had to get to the hospital, no matter what.
Richard met us halfway.
“I can’t drive. I had some wine earlier,” he said. “But my driver’s ready. I’ll have him take you to the hospital.”
“Thanks.”
Soren was down to just a shirt. It was cold outside, and I started to worry about where to get him a coat. Then, just as I was about to speak up, Candy stepped out of the elevator.
She walked toward us quickly.
“Soren! It’s freezing out there! Here, take this. I just bought it from a premium store,” she said, handing him the coat hanging over her arm.
I was surprised by her quick thinking–though I hadn’t known she was here. The way she had the perfect coat ready for him made me feel like a bumbling girlfriend who was more trouble than help.
Soren didn’t take it. “It’s fine, Miss Frieze.”
“Come on, Soren. This isn’t the time for false modesty! It’s freezing outside–you can’t go out like this!” she insisted, thrusting the coat into my hands. “Talk to him, Taylor! Don’t let him catch a cold!”
I was taken aback by her boldness, but I didn’t refuse the gift. In fact, I was grateful. I spread the coat wide and said, “Alright, put it on. It’s cold outside.”
Soren stared at me. “It’s just a few steps.”
“Nonetheless! Put it on.”

He finally complied. It fit him perfectly.
“Thank you, Candy. How much was it? I’ll pay you back,” I said, offering a smile at my unexpected ally.
“It’s fine. It was a gift for Soren, after all,” she replied, her tone teasing just a little.
I glanced at the brand and got an idea. As we stepped into the elevator, I turned around. “Well, I’ve added you as a friend. Approve my request, please.”
