Soren’s voice turned cold and severe, authoritative, as though addressing a plebeian.
I had no idea what Edward said in response, but Soren cut him off, “Save your breath for my lawye
“My request is simple: do not harass my girlfriend again. We work in the same industries and run in the same circles. Respect my wishes, and I’ll respect your livelihood.
“If you want to burn this last bridge of goodwill, though… I’m happy to grant your wish.”
My heart raced. I looked up at him, startled. This was the first time I had ever heard him openly threaten someone.
Edith’s antics had clearly angered him.
I was still reeling from the shock when he returned the phone to me. His eyes were fixed on me, calm but intense. “You want me to stay out of this, but I’m sure you can tell… that’s impossible now.”
I nodded. “Yeah, I thought things would finally settle down after the case was closed. I didn’t expect Edith to become so… extreme.”
Soleil sensed the tension and tried to ease it. “Well, Ren, things are fine now, right? Don’t be upset!”
I shot her a grateful look.
I was still shaken by the fear of what had happened. If I hadn’t pushed Soleil out of the way, or if the acid had hit her face…
It was becoming clear that the conflict between the Kennedys and the Joneses might never end. Soren would keep getting dragged into it–the whole Kenway family would.
By the time we left for the station, Soren had received a call from his mother. News of the incident had clearly spread.
He tried to calm her down before handing the phone to Soleil. “Hi, Mom… I’m fine! Really, I’m fine! Yeah, just got out of an examination. Wait, now? You want me back now? But I’m supposed to make a statement at the station… Alright, got it.”
I thought Lisbeth would want to speak with me, but she ended the call right there.
I felt a little discouraged. It wasn’t her fault, but I could tell her opinion of me had changed.
“Um, Mom says I have to go home now. She sounded really pissed,” Soleil said, her voice weak
“Got it. I’ll arrange for someone.”
Soren called his bodyguard, and we waited for his arrival with Soleil.
The man arrived in just 20 minutes. After seeing Soleil off, Soren and I headed to the station.
Soren’s lawyer was already waiting for us, and the Kennedys‘ lawyer was there as well. Even Edward showed up.
He looked surprisingly well. He wasn’t in a wheelchair and seemed much more alive. Maybe his treatment had improved. The change was so unexpected that I stared at him a little longer, trying to make sense of it.
Then, I felt a pinch on my waist. Stunned, I turned.
“What were you looking at?” Soren asked pointedly.

“I was just surprised to see him looking so… alive. I wondered if he had made a full recovery,” I replied.
“Whether that’s true or not doesn’t concern you.”
Okay, I knew it had nothing to do with me. Still, I was curious!
Man, Edward just would not stay down.
