Chapter 21
Alpha
I’ve heard that word before, but the time and place escape me.
“A poor human like you doesn’t deserve to know an Alpha. Actually,” she sneers, “You don’t deserve to breathe the same air as him
“What are you on about?” Isla asks, her anger growing
“You have no rigl tell me who I am allowed to know,” I tell the rich girl. She just stares like I’ve grown another head. Maybe I have, since I’m talking about something I don’t understand.
I glare at the woman, waiting for an explanation.
“Do you know who I am?”

“A spoiled brat who thinks throwing daddy’s money around will get her whatever she wants?” Isla asks, and I snicker.
The rich girl spins and snarls. “Tm better than dirty humans who don’t know their place.”
Rolling my eyes, I shake my head. This girl is not right in the head, and arguing with her doesn’t make me better.
“I’ve got things to do and wasting my breath on you is not one of them.” I tell the brat. Then, I take the outfit Isla picked and walk to the check out
The rich girl leaves in a whirlwind of annoyed laughter, mutter insults, and glares. She’ll have to learn sooner or later that not everyone cares about her daddy’s money. Some people rely so much on money that they lose sight of what it truly means to connect with others like Jack and my father.
Money corrupts. It consumes and changes you until you’re a different person.
Maybe if I hadn’t been given the inheritance my life wouldn’t have taken such a dismal turn. Maybe…
1 shake the thought out of my head. There’s no use wondering about a past I can’t change.
“So, what’s your plan for your first day of work tomorrow!” Isla asks as we enter my
house.
or cause Ethan
“I don’t know much about the company, so I plan to learn everything I can so I don’t mess anything up or ca problems,” I tell her honestly. I don’t want to be a burden.
Isla makes herself comfortable as Thang my new outfit in the closet. Tomorrow must go well. If it doesn’t, Ethan might decide not to keep me. Thought, it’s not like I want him to keep me. I just want the job, and I want do well.
If I’m going to make it through this divorce and make a future for myself, I have to do this.
“Fiona, you’ll do great,” she says softly. Nerves jumble in my chest, and I squeeze her hand.
“I hope so. I need this to work.”
I mumble.
“It will Ethan doesn’t seem like someone who would hire you if he didn’t think you could do this job,” she says and she’s right.

Chapter 21
My phone beeps.
He’s here.

Grabbing my purse, I make my way outside. There, in the driveway, is Ethan’s black Camaro, and he’s in the driver’s seat.
eout.
Ethan motions for me to get in the car, and I try to ignore the annoyance that bubbles up. He didn’t even bother getting o Pushing the feeling away, I climb into the passenger seat and buckle in Ethan stays stoically quiet while driving, and after a few minutes, I have to say something.
“Will you explain my job, now?” I ask. The only thing I know about this job is that it’s at the Silverclaw Company
Ethan glances at me then turns his eyes back to the road with a simple answer, “Ryan will explain everything when you arrive. I stare at him, waiting for more of a response, but none comes.
After driving for around fifteen minutes, Ethan pulls over.
“You can walk from here.”
“Excuse me?” I ask, disbelief growing in me..
Ethan’s eyebrow ticks up, and he frowns a bit.
“You said you didn’t want our relationship public, so I suggest not showing up together,” he says then motions at the large building down the road.
I did say that.
“Fine
It’s about two miles, and by the time I get to the Silverclaw Company, Ryan is waiting at the door for me with a warm smile.
“Good morning, Fiona.”
“Sorry to keep you waiting.” I tell him as he leads me to an elevator.
He waves a hand in the air, saying, “It’s no problem. I’ll be showing you around and explaining your job duties.”
“Thank you,” I respond, looking around. There are many people lingering in the lobby, but none of them pay me any
attention.
Just as the elevator dings and opens, a scoff sounds. When I look up, I see the rich girl from the shop yesterday. She glares contemptuously at me before stepping out of the elevator.
She skirts around us, as if she’s afraid of touching me, and from the nonsense she spewed yesterday about me being poor and dirty, 1 wouldn’t doubt it.
Ryan and I enter the elevator, and I wait until the doors close before asking, “Does she work here?”
“Who, Angela?” He asks, brows raised. “She does. She has a low–level position in the marketing department and manages the social media.”
I guess I’ll see her around, but maybe I won’t too often. I don’t feel like having another run–in like the one from yesterday. I didn’t deserve the treatment she gave me.
“She doesn’t matter to your job, though. You’ll be taking the position of Ethan’s secretary,” he says as we leave the elevator.

“Madison was fired for her incompetence the other day, as you saw, and Ethan needs a new secretary, so you will assist him by screening calls from clients as well as employers, and then directing the calls where they need to go either to Ethan or to another department, Ryan explains. “You will organize documents, paperwork, and data.”
He pauses and turns to me, looking me over,
“Anytime Eflun has a client meeting or business meeting, they are not to go directly to his office. The front desk on the first floor will call you, and you will ges down to bring them up. Of course, you’ll be expecting them because they are required to have an appointment to meet Ethan. He is extremely busy,” he tells me, and I can only nod.
This brings me to scheduling. You will oversee Ethan’s schedule, meaning you will schedule meetings, conferences, business trips, and anything else”
I
This all seems like normal secretarial duties, so I anotion for him to continue.
“There are also smaller tasks you will be in charge of such as ordering office supplies for you and him, maintaining organization of your desk, and making sure Ethan eats”
“Tats?” Lad, confused.
Ryan siglas with a nod. “Yes, sometimes he gets so busy that he skips meals,” he explains. “Madison kept a list of restaurants and orders Ethan liked, and she ordered food whenever she noticed he wasn’t eating
“Okay”
“Now, this is the seventh floor, the one below where you will be working.” Ryan says. “This is where my office is as well as several other higher workers are. Each floor is a level of expertise. This is the management floor. Below it are the other offices, with everyone working together to form a pyramid where Ethan sits at the top.”
Efficient.
Ryan shows me around the building, going from
others crinkle their noses in dissatisfaction. I to floor, and introducing me to workers. Some welcome me while
women watching me with annoyance. I try to ignore them.
“The Silverclaw Company deals with a mixture of technology and medicine, searching for advanced ways to battle diseases. We partner with many companies and hospitals that you will be dealing with as Ethan’s secretary,” Ryan tells me, and my heart squeezes. It makes me think about Ethan a bit, and I wonder why he chose to run a company that fights disease.
“Now, let’s announce you to the company.”
Third–person pov:
Whispers fly through the building that morning. Murmurs about the last receptionist being fired and questions about who will take the position. They all wanted to get close to the rich, handsome CEO, thinking if they could just be by his side, they might be able to catch his eye.
“It won’t be long before he calls me,” Angela, the rich beauty of the marketing department, says with a smile.
“Do you think so?” Her friend asks, and Angela nods confidently.
They make their way to the large employee meeting room where heads of each department gather for an announcement.
Angela walks in with her friend, noticing the woman from the store yesterday. She sits by the Beta, which confuses Angela, but she ignores the unimportant human.
Fiona tries to keep the nerves down at the sight of Angela, hoping she won’t make a scene like yesterday.
