Phoebe stared at him coldly, her eyes devoid of any warmth. “So, you had someone follow me. What did they find? Did they see me kissing a man, or did they see me checking into a hotel room with one?”
Declan frowned slightly and was about to speak when Phoebe turned around and walked away without another word.
The tension between them was obvious, so much so that even Lech and the maid who cooked their meals noticed.
The maid pulled Phoebe aside and whispered, “Ms. Greene, did you have a fight with Mr. Richardson?”
“No. Why?” Phoebe replied.
“Mr. Richardson seems to be in a bad mood lately,” she said.
Phoebe was silent for a few seconds before saying, “Maybe he’s just busy with work. Don’t worry about him. He’ll be fine in a few days”
“Alright,” the maid nodded and said.
After the maid left, Phoebe sat on the couch, waiting for Declan to return for dinner.
Around seven o’clock, Patrick called to inform her that Declan had gone to a banquet and wouldn’t be coming home for dinner.
After hanging up, Phoebe couldn’t be bothered to reheat the food. She ate a little, watched some TV, and then went to bed carly.
At the banquet, Declan asked Patrick for his phone every half hour.
At first, Patrick assumed Declan was expecting an important client’s call. But when Declan checked his phone again after ten o’clock, he frowned and asked, “What exactly did you tell Phoebe?”
Patrick paused, then instinctively replied, “I just told Ms. Greene that you wouldn’t be coming home for dinner.”
Declan asked, “And how did she react?”
“Ms. Greene said she got it,” Patrick answered.
Declan’s expression darkened. “She didn’t ask when I’d be back?”
“No.” Patrick shook his head.
Declan said nothing more and simply turned back to his drink.
Normally, no one at these gatherings dared to persuade Declan to drink, but tonight, he didn’t refuse anyone. He had already consumed more than ten glasses.
Since Declan had only recently recovered, Patrick was worried about the toll this drinking would take on his health. Leaning close, he whispered, “Mr. Richardson, you shouldn’t drink anymore.”
Declan shot him a cold glance. “Call Phoebe. Tell her to come pick me up.”
At that moment, Patrick realized. Declan hadn’t been waiting for a client’s call. He had been waiting for Phoebe to call him.
Patrick quickly dialed Phoebe’s number, but the call went unanswered. “Mr. Richardson, she didn’t pick up.”
“Keep calling,” Declan ordered..
