I shot a knowing look at Soren. He understood and stood. “Mom, Taylor and I are going to visit Grandpa. We’ll be back for lunch.”

Soleil jumped up cheerfully, ready to follow, but Lisbeth stopped her. “You just saw him this morning! Come back, Sol. You really should learn to be more demure by now!”
Soleil pouted and returned to the couch.
Soren reached for my hand, but I frowned at him.
It wasn’t until we left the house that he took my hand and whispered, “Why are you embarrassed? It’s just holding hands.”

“Why not?”
I gave him a teasing look. “Do you know that moms have a special protective instinct toward their sons? They really don’t like seeing their boy getting all handsy with his girlfriend.”
Mothers often fought with their daughters–in–law over this very thing–jealous of seeing their sons “taken away
by someone else.

“It’s the truth!”
He tightened his grip on my hand, his eyes softening. “Not here. Not with our family.”
A smaller house stood near the main one, its neoclassical architecture distinctive.
As we neared it, Soren handed me a parcel. “Here. Claude Monet’s ‘The Cliff Walk at Pourville.‘ A gift for my grandfather.”
I was taken aback. “When did you prepare this? How much did it cost?”
I should have brought a gift, but I’d been so busy with work that I’d forgotten. Just earlier, I suggested buying wine for him, but Soren had said they had an entire cellar of it.
It turned out that he had already prepared this.
“No, don’t pay me back for it,” he said. “It’s our joint gift. If you really want to repay me… you know what I want.”
He leaned in, and I shivered. Of course, I knew what he wanted.
I glanced around and asked, “Now?”
He raised an eyebrow. “No time like the present.”
Something emboldened me, and I lifted my chin. He lowered his head.
I kissed his cheek. “Thank you, Lord Soren. Your thoughts are appreciated.”
He suddenly turned and kissed me on the lips before pulling away. “Now this covers the price.”
