I smiled. “Alright. See you tomorrow.”
Soren’s expression softened slightly.
“Okay, you should get into the car. You’re dressed too lightly,” I added.
The wind was biting, the temperature nearing freezing, and he was wearing only a shirt and the coat Candy had bought for him.
I nudged him toward the car. As I did, I spotted a cab and waved it over.
“Get in the car. I’m leaving,” I said, shoving him toward the door before heading toward the cab.
“Let me know when you’re home,” he called.
“Will do! Now get inside!”
I watched his car drive past us and let out a long breath, sinking low into my seat. It had been quite a ride.
My phone beeped, and I saw a message from him.
Soren: [Don’t overthink this. I’m here with you. I’ll always have your back.]
A lump formed in my throat, and my eyes stung with unshed tears.
Jean called once I got home, asking about what had happened. She’d heard the news from the group chat she was in. We talked for a bit, and I felt a lot better afterward.
The next morning, I woke up early.
Knowing I would be meeting some very important members of someone’s prestigious family, I put thought into
my appearance.
I couldn’t go without makeup–it would make me seem careless–but I couldn’t overdo it either, or I’d appear vain.
By the time Soren arrived, I was ready. He looked pleasantly surprised by the result.
I had chosen a Victorian–inspired dress and accessories. He’d never seen me dressed like this, and after admiring me, he said, “Very demure and elegant. Incredible.”
“Well, I figured your family would appreciate something like this.”
“They do. You really nailed it.”
“As I should.”
Bullet circled Soren excitedly, thinking he was here to play
Soren patted his head and cooed, “Not today, boy. I need to borrow your mommy for a while. Maybe next time, okay?”
I smiled. “Why are you telling Bullet that?”
“Dogs understand a lot.”
I agreed.

We left. He hadn’t brought his driver today he was driving the SUV himself.
I was so nervous that I exhaled deeply before I even realized it.
He laughed. “Why are you so nervous? You’ve been there so many times.”
“It’s different this time!”
He started the engine but didn’t move. Instead, he looked at me.
“What?” I asked.
“Even if it is different, you don’t need to be so nervous. If you’re unsure what to say, just let me handle it.”
I hesitated for a moment before asking, “Was your grandfather really angry about last night? You and Soleil got caught up in an incident because of me. Now I’m showing up there, and…”
I wanted to apologize for what I’d done, but I didn’t know if they would accept it. If they didn’t and started to chastise me…
Soren gently patted my head. “Didn’t I tell you? I’ve got your back.‘
