Soleil paced near the doorway, rushing over as soon as she spotted us.
“I can’t stand Candy! She’s so annoying! All she does is suck up to people, and she’s really good at it,” blurted, her bluntness evident.

I chuckled and glanced at Soren before teasing, “You better get used to it. She might end up being your sister–in- law someday.”
Before I could finish, Soren raised his hand, curling his fingers as if ready to flick me again.
I quickly covered my head. “Nuh–uh! That really hurts!”
“Then stop talking nonsense!” Soren scolded.
I sighed. “It’s the truth, though. Look at how much the elders adore her personality.”
But… I couldn’t deny it.
It was just like Sally had said. I had everything going for me, except my temper. Maddison, on the other hand, had had a sweet tongue and had known how to flatter people–a skill I lacked entirely.
We had a lavish lunch that afternoon.
Chef Remy’s cooking was impeccable, and he made all the dishes I liked. I was a little touched, thinking maybe Lisbeth wasn’t entirely against me after all.
But throughout the meal, Candy dominated the conversation, always steering it toward topics that perfectly aligned with Lisbeth’s interests. It was evident that Lisbeth favored her.
Meanwhile, Soren stayed out of it. His sole focus was making sure I had food on my plate, piling it up until I had to stop him myself.
“Please stop giving me more. I’m really full. You’ll be wasting food if you keep going,” I said, gently blocking his
hand.
“You didn’t eat much. Just a little more,” Soren coaxed.
“No, really. I’m full.” I moved my plate aside, my eyes silently pleading.
Then Candy spoke up.
“Soren, I like that dish too,” she said, extending her plate toward him, her smile as pleasant as ever.
I was taken aback. Was she really doing this?
I assumed someone like her would have already eaten all the finest delicacies.
Soren froze, clearly caught off guard and unable to respond.
Although he had used serving utensils to ensure hygiene, it was still inappropriate to offer food meant for someone else, especially since Soren clearly did not want to
Yet, since Candy had already made the request, refusing her outright would be equally impolite. After all, she remained a guest in his household.
Her self–deprecating gesture placed both Soren and me in an awkward position.
Even Soleil was stunned, watching the scene unfold with great interest.

The tension thickened.
Then Lisbeth spoke in a calm, composed tone, “Candy, if you like it, you should come over more often. I’ll have the chef prepare it for you.”
She placed the dish on Candy’s plate, averting the crisis.
Soleil looked disappointed, as if expecting a more dramatic showdown.
Soren withdrew his serving spoon and transferred the food to his own plate.
Lisbeth shot him a brief, neutral glance. She said nothing, yet I could tell she disapproved of her son’s choice.
I felt so full I might burst, but the atmosphere was too tense for even a burp, so I held it in.
After lunch ended and we left the table, I headed straight for the restroom to catch my breath.
I pulled out my phone, and it rang–Cameron’s name flashed on the screen.
What could she possibly want now?
After a brief hesitation, I answered.
“Taylor, this three–person room is unbearable. It’s so noisy I can’t sleep at all! Miles and I had to rest against the side of the bed, but we couldn’t even get a wink of sleep!”
I listened calmly before replying flatly, “You guys insisted on staying at the best hospital, so you should be grateful there’s even a bed. There are people stuck in the hallways with nowhere to sit.”
